One trick I like to use, is placing elements so that your eyes are drawn to the photos.
Photos and journaling always come first, and then elements are placed to enhance the visuals.
Having space without pictures or elements is also perfectly fine.

It's kinda hard to explain, but if you peek through some layouts in my gallery, you will see what I mean.

You are doing really great, and it all becomes easier as you make more layouts.

Larger photo's on your first two layouts will help then stand out or mat the photos to give them weight.
I think the shadows on all three are a little heavy. Shadows are the hardest thing to judge and every elements needs something slightly different. Take a look at layouts in the gallery and see how they build dimension by varying the amount of shadow on each page elements.

HTH - don't be too hard on yourself - it all takes time to learn

Just a note from me (who actually doesn't have time to scrap much!) is.. your journaling would greatly benefit from being placed on something else like a vellum background or coordinating paper. Also, you might try some different fonts - the ones in the layouts above are a bit plain and don't really fit your theme much.

Good Luck!
