can someone help me with a picture?

I have a picture that I scanned today. For some reason, it has turned out really dark, and it is so disapointing to me for it is a really wonderful and cherished photo that I am anxious to digiscrap. If you could see the print, it is so much lighter and much more beautiful! Especially around her eyes and hand...
So I thought I would show you the picture and see if anyone could shed some light into what I am doing wrong--or is my scanner just messed up...
Thanks for any insight you can give!!!

Here's the pic!

I am not the scanner expert, but do you use photoshop? Maybe you can use the shadow/highlight adjustment to get rid of the shadows?

are you scanning from home? Sometimes you can adjust the quality.. clarity of your scan with the software the scanner came with

I use photo correction actions with my pse also.

I'd like to see the original photo because even the darkest scan would have caused issues in other areas which I do not see. I think the real problem is the original photo just didn't have any fill flash for the shadows with the sun... fill flash would have opened up the photo and highlighted the eyes.... This is a quick 2 minute fix... stylized and brightened slightly... with time, this could be fixed completely.. Enjoy!

I use Photoshop and PSP both.
It is in the midtone and shadowing, I can fix this for you if you give me the full size version. This is just a quickie draft so you could see.
