Clip art of the net is just fine to print... it is for personal use that is whey they put it out there... you would give credit just like anything else. If it is a copyrighted photo or something of that nature you are back to square one.. you need permission. The best thing is to get permission... not to mention that fact that it is also the polite thing to do. I hope this helps.

That's good that the photographer works that out with you.. and kudos for you for even asking him/her. It is not the mention of where the photo came from that is important (although that is nice to mention) but the $$ that the photographer is losing.

I can't tell you the number of times I've overheard people saying - don't buy the "big" package.. just buy the small one and then scan it and print it at CVS.. I can understand the urge to do that... but that is direct copywrite infringment and is taking $$ out of the photographers pocket. As a pro photog.. it irks me a bit!

Trademarked/Logos - taking them off-site to Costco, Wal-Mart or any other lab should be a problem if you do not have permission. Even though your creations are for your personal use (not for sale or commercial use) the lab still has to observe the copyright law. They ideally cannot/will not print something that has trademarks/logos etc. unless you show proof of permission.

Technology has really put a dent in the pro photograher's business. As a result of technology I no longer do straight prints. My proofing is done in low res digital images, burned to a CD with copy protection on it.

As a result of technology if I shoot film, I proof and have all the money for the service up front. I also give my customer the negatives and/or original digital images. My price is higher than it would be otherwise.

I started doing this when one day at Wal-Mart I saw someone using the kiosk to make copies of a wedding I shot. The abuser was having a good laugh over how she and the bride's mother were getting one over on the photographer.

I wasn't happy about this. After all my skills as a photographer were putting food on the table and paying my bills for living expenses.

So now when I shot a wedding I charge more knowing that I will not get any reprint or album orders. And if a customer comes back to me for print services I am sure to give them a very reasonable price.

P.S. This past week the RAAI case with the single mother who downloaded music without paying for it - she was found guilty, a dozen songs, $9,000.00 fine per song.

Copyright infringement is a lawyers dream - perpetual job security.

It's not all that bad though... I just did a large photo shoot for a local nursery school.. and the real nice part.. all the families pre-paid.. So, at least I know I am getting $$$ even if they then take the photos to CVS for reprints. I'm fully aware that some of the my clients will do this - but that is just part of doing business in this techno era. I will more than make this up by providing good quality portraits.. and by not charging them more. I also try to offer them services that they just will not be able to get by scanning the photos...

Well.. good for them.. I think! Again, I'm kinda torn about this. While I respect copywrite policies and hope others respect my photography as well.. I also don't like to have to explain why I want to copy something. How are they going to know if my "proof" is authentic or just something I wrote up at home.. interesting though... may start a trend.

Its funny after reading this thread and everything...

I brought up the digital file question to the photographer I hired to take DS 1 year old pics. She said I could have it, if she could see my prints (to make sure they were good, which they are) and if I could teach her how to digiscrap. So I get the digital files for teaching her something that I can't help but talk about with other people. How cool is that! Don't know what she's going to do if anyone else asks! But for me, my conscience will be clear and I will get the files. (But I am also buying some prints from her as well for my family so she's making some money)!
