EHD Drive question??

Do you leave your ehd on all the time? ie you don't turn it off after you powerdown your computer?

why do I ask??? cuz I got home from shopping today and went to download my pictures I took today.....
and no drive G (my ehd)

waaaaa I got it for Christmas last year so it's still under warranty. But I wonder was it user error?? that made it die?? I leave it plugged into my computer all the time but hadn't powered it down.

I was a good girl and had backed up my pictures in August. So I really only lost the last month or so and I guess it's a blessing I hadn't been taking many photos lately! so it wasn't much....

BUT I was waiting for payday so I could start a mozy account and start backing up my kits... hadn't done it yet..so it's not a pretty sight seeing a grown woman panic!!

Oh I'm so sorry to hear that. Loosing anything still stinks. Glad to hear it wasn't too much though.

I have two EHD. One will shut down when I shut the pc down. The other I do have to shut off manually.

It's hard to say what caused it to die but have you tried to leave it off for a while then turning it on again? I know my EHD will go missing if I leave my pc on all day and usually a reboot fixes it.

interesting... just out of curiousity.. what brand is the EHD? There are a number of things that could cause it to go bad... primary and foremost is overheating. If you don't have a good one with nice ventilation and/or a fan built in (most don't have a fan) - then it could overheat and "blow up"...

I do leave mine on all the time since it is setup on an automated backup system 4 times a week. I also do not turn my PC off.. well.. ever except on the rare reboot for windows updates or the occasional hiccup.

Just a note - why not save all your photos on an extra PC / Laptop hard-drive and then just use the EHD as a backup? Having all your photos, etc on an EHD will be MUCH slower to access than using an internal HDD.. especially the newer ones! Good Luck!

Pesto it's a Maxtor made by Seagate.

I've been backing up my photos...it's the other 60 plus GB of kits that I'm mourning lOL

Yikes! So sorry Lisa! I think I need to back up my EHD now. Ours is connected to the desktop and I think it shuts down everytime the computer does, but I can't be for sure (this is DH's department).

I'm so sorry, Lisa!!!! I know with my EHD I only have it plugged in and on if I'm actually using it. Which is really only when I'm backing up.

I wouldn't worry about the 60gigs of kits....it is so easy to contact designers and ask them to reset your links. When my pc crashed in July, all the designers I contacted were more than happy to do so. Hopefully you remember all the stuff you had though, that's the hard part lol

I used to turn my EHD off when I was not using it. Then I started leaving it on all of the time. (It does not shut down when the computer is off.) Then I felt how hot it can get so I turn it off when I turn off the computer.

I've got to get a new EHD since my laptop's internal drive is FULL. I had one for backup purposes but somehow the USB connection got messed up and it kept appearing and disappearing in the middle if being used. Ugh! Since it went AWOL I've been backing up on CDs--saving all my photos/zip files. Now my CD burner is not working. I think I need a whole new laptop.....just don't have the cash right now. I hope everything works out with your EHD, Lisa. Computers can be so frustrating!
