General Byte Chat Thread, EHD Drive question?? in Scrappers Community; I'm more frustrated at myself... I should have backed up... I thought about it.. I didn't so now ...

just a note to all -> maxtor drives are not very good compared to the other major brands - that's typically why they are a bit cheaper. I would only (and do only) buy the following: Western Digital (best!), Samsung, Hitachi. The rest are just not as reliable.... the price difference is typicall < $10 so really no reason not to get a WD drive.

Also, again, if you are buying a EHD that is prebuilt - look for one with lots of air circulation (or even better... a fan). They do run hot but should only get hot after lots of use... if your EHD is getting hot when just sitting idle.. it is not a good design and you should shut it down.

I build my own EHD's all the time using supplies from newegg. It only takes 3 minutes to get one up and running and you get to choose the exact drive and enclosure you want - a decent solution.
