dpi vs. ppi

I read somewhere that to print the layouts they should be 300 dpi. what is the difference between dpi and ppi? PSP only shows ppi and when I set it to 300 ppi, the thing is HUGE! I want to do a 8 1/2 x 11 page, it ends up being 2550 x 3300 pixels and the file size in astronomical.

Can anyone help? TIA.

Laura, you're doing it correctly

When you use 300dpi (or ppi...same thing), you get a much larger canvas and file size. But, if you're ever planning to print your layouts, you really really need this bigger file size to get a good print. If you print at 72dpi, it'll look all fuzzy and pixel-y. I always do mine in 300dpi, then burn that file to CD. When I'm ready to share the layout online, duplicate the layout and resize it to 72dpi to lower the file size. HTH!
