Smile Memory Card Question

I am needing to buy another or a few more memory cards. Here are my questions. First of all, what is the real difference between a Sandisk and a Sandisk Ultra memory card? I use a Canon Digital Rebel XT if that makes a difference.
My other question is someone had told me about memory cards failing...how does this happen and is there a way to prevent it? I was going to buy a 4GB memory card, but they said it is better to buy more small ones.
Thanks for your help again.

The ultra memory cards are a faster speed. This makes a difference if you like to take alot of continuous shots -- the photos write to the card faster so the buffer does not get full. I'm not sure about memory cards failing, I've never had that to happen. But technology always has the opportunity to fail, so it may be smarter to do a couple of 2 gb cards rather than a 4. However, I have had files corrupt themselves on my card. So after loading all of the files on my computer, I re-format the card every time I put it back in the camera.

How do you re-format the card? I have never heard of that before. I always just download delete and start taking more pics.

One thing to note about chooing a higher speed card is that it can still only write as fast as your camera allows - with a DSLR you should be but for other models the higher speed card may not make a difference.
Smaller cards are a better option for several reasons not the least being relying on one card can get a bit dangerous - if it fails, or you lose or misplace it you have lost literallly hundreds if not thousands of photos. Most still recommend that you stick to say 4 512 cards, otherwise he temptation to wait til the card is full before downloading gets too great.

As to formatting - you should format regulary- not necesarily everytime you delete pictures but every second or third time at least - a camera card is just likea mini arddrive - even though photosare deleted they are not actually gone until they are written over and just likea computers harddrive you end up with gaps and a build up on your card that requires defragging or in a the cards case reformatting. Look in your cameras menu for the eformat card option.

When I was reading a comment about the regular card vs the ultra was that they said for the Canon Rebel XT they didn't see any difference in how long it took the card to process. But I wondered if anyone who has a Rebel XT and has tried both had any opinion on it.

Thanks for the info on re-formatting the card, I definately will check into that. I have had it for a couple months and have never done it yet. And I've had some others for about 3 years and they have never been re-formatted.
