Unhappy Just a friendly PSA message

That is: Prevent Stupid Actions!!

If you don't do it already, BACK UP YOUR FONT FILES!!!!!!!!

I had been having trouble with my computer locking up and/or crashing. DH suggested reformatting my hard drive to clear off the ghosts, gremlins, and all around useless junk. Past experiences have taught me that this can be a daunting and sometimes scary undertaking.

So, thinking I'm ahead of the game, I meticulously go through and back up everything, even though most of it is already archived on cds. Everything good, right? WRONG! I forgot to back up my font directory, and lost hundreds of them that I've spent nearly two years collecting.

So, have you ever done anything so utterly idiotic that it made you ill or just want to cry?

OMG, I have done other stupid things!

Just wanted to hijack your thread to add to back up EVERYTHING!!!!! Fonts you can go & collect again (total PITA, but still possible), but your precious photos are totally irreplaceable!

I just got another (this makes 3!) external hard drive -- and it came with this nifty utility that you can use to back up your ENTIRE hard drive -- with one click of a button. Which is what I did before reformatting the durn thing. Yes, still having network problems (ARGH!) but at least I know all my mail, photos, LOs, fonts, EVERYTHING is safely backed up.

just curious....how long to back up everything? Like Lisa, I have 3 hard drives, but most are just back ups of back ups, sort of. when i get a new drive, i transfer everything to it, keeping just what i need on my laptop (and its hard drive is STILL full! ).

I have CDs and DVDs of 80% of the stuff, but it seems I'm forever catergorizing and organizing my folders! Any easy way of doing this?

UGHHHH!!! i can so relate in bigger ways.

I just recently got a new laptop, its beautiful, so i put everything from my old pc onto an EHD and then moved it all to my laptop, having my EHD as backup. My husband took my EHD to work, erased it and backed up his computer on it.. My brandnew laptop crashed thursday (due to some writing tablet software) and had to be completely wiped clean, i couldn't even get into it to back up the last week of work. So i got it back friday, went to copy my stuff back.. and well i ended up copying my husbands work documents instead...lol

I can laugh about this now, luckly for me, whenever you hook up to my husbands work server it copies everything.. so most of my stuff was on the server, but it was a fluke that it was...

so BACK UP! BACK UP! BACK UP!!!!!!! then double check that its backed up before you do anything silly!!!!!!!!
