Talking Deciding on which size to go...printing a layout

Does anyone do 8.5x11 printing? We have a stinky printer that is useless for me to print off layouts right now. And we'll not be getting a good one in the foreseeable future. However, I do want to begin printing off layouts as we love sitting down as a family and looking through them. But printing them at services seems to be cost prohibitive to me (especially 12x12). I had always set a limit of $3 for a double-spread paper layout..and I'm already seeing that go up to at least $4 for a double layout with digital (and I thought it was going to be cheaper!! LOL).

So, my practical side says do 8.5x11 layouts, and someday I'll have a printer that I can print the layouts on. In the meantime, I can do select ones at Kinko's?

But my other side says do 12x12 layouts and have them printed at 8x8. The only kink I'm finding in this, for me, is when we're given certificates for accomplishment that I want to include in a layout (our scanner stinks, too LOL). Adding pages doesn't seem to be a huge issue, but a small one.

I do a ton of layouts a year, too - will an 8x8 album hold up to tons of added pages? We really like the chronological books, and I figure I'll need 2 big albums per year (the 12x12 needed 2 per year - but I'm a really lumpy scrapper up to this point). I know I can probably expand the 8x8's..but do they hold up?

yeah..yeah..I'm so undecided in this. I don't want to get too far into it, only to find I did it all wrong and have to start over. Adivce? How do you do it?

I Print mine 8x10 this way I'm not wasting any photo paper. This is a common size also so its usually a decent price. I'm in canada and its $3 for an 8x10 here at walmart... Plus you can alway find a frame to use if you wanted to.

printing

I always thought I wanted to print 12x12, & that is what I create. However, I haven't bought a wide format printer yet--it's on my wish list! I usually duplicate my 12x12 & resize it to 8x8 so I can print it to look at. There's something about holding that print that does it for me, lol. I am currently using an Epson c88 which is not a 'photo printer', but prints beautifully!! I saw this printer for sale at my local Office Depot for $79!!! I'm going to try some 8.5x11 & see if I like them. I like instant gratification, so taking them to be printed is not an option for me.

If you print 8x10 - how do you store them?

Creating at 12x12 and then printing at 8x8 means that if at some future time you can or wish to you have teh option of getting reprints at 12x12. You could even still have favourites printed at 12x12 for a "special album" and the rest at 8x8 for more ordinary day to day events.
8x8 albums are made by teh same people as teh 12x12 albums so the quality is just the same. Buy the same brand as your 12x12 albums if you are happy with them.

HTH

BTW there are 8.5x11 and 8x10 scrapbook albums out there too

Printing is expensive for me. I have special layouts go into 12x12 albums. Every day moments go into 6x6. Now that Costco offer online uploads for 8x12, I'm planning to do 8x8 for things in between.

My 12x12 albums are not more than 40 pages (in 20 page protector sheets). 72 pages (or 36 page protector sheets) for my 6x6 albums is the most I feel comfortable about holding open.

I create at 12x12 (just in case) and save at this size, but I resize them to 8x8 to print. I really like the 8x8 size though, so I'm not sure I'll ever go the 12x12 size, LOL! I like the way the smaller albums fit in my hand, they seem less bulky!

I'm actually using a K&Company 8.5 x 8.5 album at the moment, and have put in extra pages, it seems to be working well! That's another thing about digital scrapping that I love, the pages lay flat and I can fit many more layouts in an album than if I had all the layers of papers and embellishments to deal with. So I think you're able to add many more pages than if you paper scrapped, which is great for me as I don't have a lot of storage room in my house for big bulky albums!

Since I'm centering the layout on the paper I print on, I have a small white border on the left and right sides, and I just cut the top and bottom to match. So the layout is actually 8.5 x 8.5, but if you didn't like the border you could cut all sides off, I don't mind the border though, it's hardly noticable when it's in the album! Or if you use an 8x8 you'll have to cut them.
