EXIF data? huh??

Can someone explain to me what EXIF data is as used in this sentence, "You may be asked to submit proof of your image, including the original, unmodified file with all EXIF data intact."

This is way over my head - as far as I know, I download my pictures from my camera to the computer and they are .jpg files.

Oh I have seen this somewhere but I was curious so this is what I found:

Digital cameras save JPEG (.jpg) files with EXIF (Exchangeable Image File) data. Camera settings and scene information are recorded by the camera into the image file. Examples of stored information are shutter speed, date and time, focal length, exposure compensation, metering pattern and if a flash was used.
Use EXIF data as a learning tool

Digital camera owners study EXIF data to compare successful photos to those that are not. The information provides insight about how camera settings affect photo characteristics such as exposure, depth-of-field and subject movement.

EXIF data can be read by applications that support JPEG including web browsers, image editing and organizing programs, and some printer drivers. The drivers use the information to automatically enhance images, often resulting in a better looking prints. If an edited image is saved correctly, the data can be viewed online at photo hosting sites.

Some photo hosting sites, such as Flickr, use the word "properties" instead of EXIF.

Dani - thank you so much for solving that mystery!

I use PSE and I opened a photo and selected 'File Data' from the 'File' menu and it brought up the EXIF data and lots of other data as well. The interesting things recorded were the camera model, f-stop, date and time, etc. Very cool feature! I learned something tonight!

To keep data intact - don't use PS's save for web feature - it doesn't keep the exif data, use save as and it will keep it.
