I think also that this site has become so popular, and there are so many lo's posted every day, that it is almost impossible to keep up with them. Last year when I would post a lo, it would stay up in the first three positions of the gallery for quite a long time, but now when we post a lo, it will only be on the first page a few minutes.
It can almost be a full time job posting comments. So I usually go through the gallery, and if I see something that really catches my eye, I will make a comment on it.
Like others have said, I also do see a slow down on the board.
It's too bad in a way, because I do agree with you that it's nice to have someone comment about your lo when you've spent so much time and emotion on them.

this seems to be the same for everyone here at SBB as of late for some odd reason...i'd guess that there are so many other sites opening daily that also have galleries that it's hard for everyone to keep up everywhere, including here!

personally, i miss all the warm fuzzies from comments! lol. i do make an effort to scan the gallery here & comment every day, but sometimes the time gets away from me!

I think a lot of people that used to comment more frequently are now spread thin between all of their design team duties, their blogs, and their own forays into designing that they just don't have time to comment like they used to. I also think that new people just starting to post haven't been around long enough to understand our culture of trying to be reciprocal praise-leavers. That's okay. They'll get it.

A little OT, but I think it's just fascinating how different reactions are to layouts posted on different galleries. Yesterday I posted 2 layouts to here and another site. And today, I discover that one was quite popular (more hits and comments) here, whereas it got much less attention at the other site, where the OTHER layout had more hits and comments.

The upshot of this ramble is it's not just when and where you post, but often it's WHAT you post too! Not that this is helpful really, I just found it totally fascinating.

Meanwhile, yes, if I'm sitting here waiting for someone to comment on my latest layout, I usually see how many pages back I can get in the gallery, and try to share the love around *hugs* everyone!!

Its always tough - I set aside one day a week to go through that entire days comments - generally that is over 500 layouts - It takes me about 5 hours and Im on a DSL connection - that is pretty slow ( though no where near as bad as dial up) I comment on any layout with three comments or less. I don't reciprocate comments very often I must admit but my time is spread very thin so I do what I can - Im more active in the forum to give feedback there. A smaller site will result in more comments on your layouts generally - there is no denying it. I wrote this article http://scrapbook-bytes.com/cgi-scrip...icle_240.shtml on the reasons why comments were so low. Every so often people get enthused about making comments then it drops off again and DTM 's are constantly discussing ways to improve it - but we cant mandate the community to comment, only encourage. As of this minute there are 52,653 members of SBB - at least half of those are active members - if not more, so there should be more commenting than there is. With CT's for designers being mandated to post in three different galleries i think a lot of people post and run as well. I think 3 comments is a good response for any layout - I have some with less than that and I am second ( excluding elements) in the top poster list. If you want CC then you have to specify it as people will rarely volunteer critical comments not matter how constructive so add "CC please" to your title to attract attention for that.
It is sad not to recieve comments on layouts you have worked so hard on. We are a community - certainly the biggest, helpful ( look at our tutorial pages - the largest collection on the web) and a wonderful source for inspiration given how many look through the gallery - even if they dont comment. Part of being a community is giving as well as recieving - I hope more of the community gives coments when they can, any suggestions for improving commenting would be welcome

I noticed a couple comments about reciprocating and would like to offer a suggestion. I have received some comments from some very talented people on this site and appreciate that someone that talented thought enough of my LO to comment. But when I go to their gallery and see that one LO has more comments on it than I have on all of mine combined I would become intimited - after all how much more could I offer. So instead of reciprocating on an actual layout, I send a PM to that poster to thank them for their comments and if I don't understand a suggestion, I can ask for more specifics. This way I let them know how much I appreciate their comments without it getting lost.
