no, you have it right
and I never realized this when I submitted my own stuff. I have three layouts that they selected for their Idea Books and I have been sitting on the contracts for weeks now. They usually give scrapbook supplies as compensation for layouts published in their magazine....paper scrapbooking supplies. However, for the idea book, they give a copy of the book. Hmmm ....PLUS...consider this.....if you are published, they want you to send an actual copy of the print to them (they return it later) instead (or as well as, depending on who you talk to) of the 300 dpi file. I'm a little miffed about this because it costs me money to have layouts printed and then I am to spend money on shipping.....PLUS, when they ship back the Idea Books (with my layouts), I may be expected to pay custom, duties and taxes on those items.
I was willing to accept the fact that I might not be paid for it, but I think that their insisting upon my sending them actual printed files when the 300 dpi file is a much better option, .........bugs me. I even brought it up with them and asked them to reconsider this, but they ignored me.
So I have been doing a lot of thinking about how important I feel it is to be recognized by Memory Makers. I mean, most people would like to have their layouts published and all, but for me, I wonder if it is a wise decision. I am not sure I understand completely in the contract as to whether or not I can use my layouts later as say.....templates on a cd that I am selling. I may be giving away my rights to the layout....and for what? a stroke of my ego?
So, I have decided from this point onward that I am only submitting to magazines that pay.
