Question OK-how do you get that arm sticking out?

Hi all-

As you know, we are all intrigued with this 3-D arm-sticking-out- of-the- photo-thing that the pals started. I have a basic idea, but I can't get it to look just right, can those of you that have perfected it help the rest of us out? A few I can think of: Anjie, the pals, scrapster, etc.....

I use PSP 8. I'm sure I can use PS directions as well. Angie-I know you're a PSP user. Can you tell me the best way to get the look. Thanks all. Your work is BEAUTIFUL!!!!!

i've been planning to do that forever and emma's reminded me! i plan to do more too, it's really fun!
there are a few ways of course. here's what i did. in ps, but it would work in any program. i duplicated the photo first. made the frame and put it in the middle. (frame sandwich) then i deleted all but what was outside the frame on the TOP layer. then i just carefully cut out his arm (i forgot and didn't feel like going back but i'd highly recommend using a slight feather, mine's a little choppy up close). i used the polygonal l***o tool. it just lets you keep clicking in small lines instead of trying to hold the l***o tool steady. anyway, i deleted all but his arm and the poor, poor butterfly. that's it. his arm was on the top layer, then the frame, then the rest of the photo. oh, i deleted the part of the bottom photo that was sticking out of the frame too. lmk if that makes sense! Ü
here's mine again so you can see what i mean: butterfly
i'm going to change it soon. dh thinks his whole elbow should stick out and i HATE it, but he's right! Ü

i did mine slightly different than margie, but along the same lines. i duplicated the photo layer, made the frame (just a square shape, then cut out the inside), and put it between the layers.

then i made the bottom photo layer invisibile, changed the opacity on the top photo layer so that i could see the frame under it. i ctrl+click on the frame layer, to select the frame. then using the magic wand tool, set to 'add to selection', i selected the inside of the frame. went to the freehand tool, and set it for 'subtract from selection' and removed my arms, the cake, and the top of dylan's head from the selection. added a slight feather to the selection, and then his delete on the keyboard (while working on the top photo layer). then i made the bottom photo layer visible .

this is mine- (fyi- posted on a different site!) http://www.pagesoftheheart.net/Photo...php?photo=1763

hmmmm...I also did mine differently, lol.

I did mine in PSP. I put my photo as a layer on top of a transparent background (that's just how I always work with a photo, dunno why!). Then I added the picture frames as a 2nd layer. (The frames were included with PSP....I had to open a blank transparent image, add the frame to that, then copy and paste to my layout).

Once I had my frames where I wanted them, I lowered the opacity on the frames layer to around 50% or so, so that I could see the photo underneath. Then I used the eraser tool and just erased the parts of the frame where I wanted the arm/flower to be on top of the frame. Then I set the opacity back to 100%. Here's Mine

Then I just erased out all the background in the photo, and added a new background behind it all. Hope that makes sense!

OK - how do you get that arm sticking out?

Thanks for the step by step directions ladies. I have PSP so will try my hand at this later. Each of these 3 layouts are so very unique and well done. Thanks for sharing. SN

sounds kinda hard :)

I was having a hard time getting through reading it all with the new layers and duplicating, transparent, etc talk.

It's SO easy! I use PS7

Put marquee around subject, whatever shape you want. Then use magnetic l***o with a feather of about 3 pixels and select the portion of the picture you want hanging out. Select inverse, Clear. Now you have a picture with something hanging out of it. Add a border in whatever way you like. Add a drop shadow to hanging part to add some depth.

I got the idea from Suzanne's blur tutorial on how to extract the portion you don't want blurred. The magnetic l***o and slight feather are the key. The better you are at extracting, the less feather you need (maybe 1 pixel, depending on size of image).

What's with the ***? I wanna say L***o, not swear!
Have fun!
