I think I want to submit, but...

I think I want to begin submitting some of the things I've done and am really proud of, but I was wondering if you fab already-published scrappers could give me some advice. (Have I done a good enough job buttering you up to get answers??? hee hee hee! )

Which magazines have you had success with when submitting digital layouts? Any that seem to frown on CG LOs and it's a waste of time to submit to?

Is it better to just submit to all of them regardless of their particular calls and get it done all at once, or have you had better luck submitting a LO that fits a current call?

Once I submit, do I have to take LOs down from here? Or only when I have received notice that they are being published?

If you submit to a bunch of mags at a time, what happens if more than one mag wants to publish it? Do you just say "No" to subsequent requests if you've accepted a request?

Do all the mags give "supplies" as compensation? (I'm a CGer ONLY, have never done and have little interest in paper scrapping. True, I'm not thinking about submitting just to get paid or anything, but I was just wondering.)

Ok, I think that sums up all my questions. Any advice? If anyone has some free time on their hands, I'd love if you could take a peek at my gallery (here or at 2Peas - I have more (earlier) stuff up over there) and tell me if you think I should go for it or keep working on my layouts until I get better? I just started in January, and scrapping is all I think about now! hee hee!

Thanks a bunch in advance!

Great news Trinity! Big step and I know how meaningful it is and how many questions it creates!!

As far as which mags accept cg lo's...so far they all seem to. Although I know people seem to be having the greatest success with Simple Scrapbooks, Memory Makers and Scrapbooks Etc (at least from what I've noticed myself). Me personally, I'm being published in Simple Scrapbooks, Scrapbooks Etc, and Creating Keepsakes. I also got a call from Memory Makers, but I had to decline as that layout was picked up by a different magazine.

I've only ever submitted one layout out to a non-specific call...just thought it was a good layout and sent it out. Never heard any response. I've submitted four other times for specific calls and got a call back in every case. So, just in my own experience, I think you have better chances of getting chosen if you submit to a specific call. JMO!!!

I usually do not post or I'll take down the layouts that I send in. There's no written rule on this, but I do know that mags prefer layouts to be fresh and never before published. If you do happen to keep it posted to the gallery here, you will have to remove it if you've been notified that they want your layout. What you can do, if a layout is posted, is just move it to a private folder until it's published...that way you don't lose any of the comments that are currently there and still keep it private, and you can also easily move it back in the public gallery once that particular issue has been published.

When you get the call, 'most' magazines will ask you up front if the particular layout they're interested in is still available. If it's been picked up already elsewhere, then you just tell them that it's no longer available. Or even if they don't ask, you still tell them that. Simple as that

No...not all mags give supplies only. The mags that 'generally' give supplies only as compensation are Ivy Cottage, Paperkuts, and Memory Makers. The ones that pay in cash are Creating Keepsakes ($50 for a 1 page lo...$75 for a two page lo), Simple Scrapbooks ($50 for a 1 page lo...$100 for a two page lo), and Scrapbooks Etc ($100 for a 1 page lo...and I think$150 for a two page lo).

I always tell everybody to just go for it!! You never know what look/style they're wanting, so if all else fails...SUBMIT!!! LOL!

GL!

I am not yet published but will be soon enough with layouts appearing in Simple Scrapbooks, Scrapbooks Etc and 2 of Memory Makers Idea Books.

I think that all of the main magazines are starting to look more closely at digital layouts, but Simple Scrapbooks has just finished putting together a special digital issue so they have taken a ton of digital layouts for that purpose.

My luck in being published has been in replying to specific calls but that doesn't stop me from submitting everything else as well

My layouts have come down the second I was told they were being published, but I have to warn you that I know of at least one other person who was told that they liked a layout of hers but didn't want to publish it because they had seen it online in her gallery here and wanted something fresh instead. I think that is a rare case, but I would keep it in mind if I were you. When you need to remove it from the public, you might want to create a private album and just move the layout there temporarily. You will be able to move it back once the layout has been published with a note "as seen in Simple Scrapbooks" or something like that.

I don't know what all of the magazines offer. Memory Makers gives supplies, or idea books depending on what you are being published in. Scrapbooks Etc. pays, SS pays, and CK pays. I am not sure about the others. I found a site on the net once that listed the payment of all of these magazines and I can't find it now. If anyone has that link or similar info, that would be great to publish here.

Tip for you; Remember to keep good notes on your layouts as you create them. They will want to know the fonts you used and the source of any of the elements you may have used that were not made by you. I have learned the hard way with this because after rasterizing font layers I no longer have access to the font name in the layers (unless I am missing something) and sometimes it can be very difficult to identify the font.

I will try to have a look at your gallery a little later on when I have some more time.

Good luck.

You guys are so GREAT! Ok, I know I am PMSing (TMI, SORRY!) but I am seriously getting teary-eyed that the people at this site are so helpful and nice and eager to answer questions. What a great community!

This is a great tip, something I never would have thought of:

"What you can do, if a layout is posted, is just move it to a private folder until it's published...that way you don't lose any of the comments that are currently there and still keep it private, and you can also easily move it back in the public gallery once that particular issue has been published."

Thanks Shannon!

I have an idea for a little album I want to create once I get my very first digital camera (maybe tomorrow? Thursday? Where is that dang thing???!!! lol!). Kind of a twist on an "all about me" album. I am so excited about the ideas I have for it!

How do you resist the temptation to post a layout and get feedback? Will that get easier the longer I do this? I've only been scrappin' a few short months, and I think I *need* that validation of getting a little praise here and there. Maybe as I get into it more, I'll be more brave about submitting.

Thanks so much for your great answers! Congrats on getting published, Shannon and Maya!
