Question Paint Chips? Textures? Newbie questions!

Okay I've done several layouts, using kits and by making my own papers. Sounds silly but I really have no idea what I would use the little paint chips sheets for! I've seen them in kits but what in the world do you do with them?
And in the downloads area, there is a section with textures...pictures of gravel and leaves and things....huh? I just don't get it. I use filters in DIP and I understand that a lot of those come from textures, but how do these pictures of gravel or leaves give me textures?

Well paint chips are wonderfull for a home improvement page hehe... But they are also fun for maby a lo about a kid who is crazy about colors to show what colors they love. Use them as a journaling elelment. The textures i have only ever used one a photo of grass. I used it as a background for a journal page about the easter bunny. I would do walk of the gallery so you can see what others are doing with these items. But remember you do not have to use the things that others are everyone has there own style. I work in a scrapbook store. And love to play with all the stuff at work. But there is alot of it i would not buy becuse it dose not fitt my own style... Good luck cant wait to see what you come up with .

The Textures are also used in PS etc for converting to psd files for use in with the texturiser filter - you can use them in DIP with the plugin texturiser filter if you have it

When I make a paper set, I usually make paint chips for easy color sampling. If the papers and elements are mostly texturized and/or grunged, it can be hard to get a good sampling of the color with the eyedropper. The paint chips are always flat and untexturized and they don't have any shadows and such, so you can sample the kit colors for fonts, new elements, etc. HTH =)

perkidawn, textures (and photos of interesting textures) can be used to add texture or pattern to a flat paper or element - various filters are available to do this for different programs, or even apply the texture as a new layer and adjust colour/histograms/opacity/blends etc to give an interesting effect. textures are also great for making brushes (especially grungy ones)

as for paint chips, I have never used one on a layout, but I usually include one when I make a kit just for colour matching (if someone wants to make their own elements or plain papers to match the kit, ya know)

hope that helps a bit

The only thing I have ever used paint chips for is color sampling. Otherwise, I find them pretty useless. No offense to those of you who make and include them in your kits. They just aren't for me. Same with those bottle caps. I do use textures on occasion for adding texture and depth to flat papers.

I think the paint chips are great for matching your own elements to the kits colors. For example. I have an older scrapbooking program (basically useless since it doesn't support layers) on my PC that lets you make paper dolls to add to your LOs. SOOOOOOOOOOOO, if I want to make a paper doll I can use the paint chips to match the dolls clothing to the kit. Another idea is if you want to make a border around a photo or make your own matte for behind a photo.
Textures can also be used as patterns. For example, in a fall LO you could fill text with an image of colored leaves instead of just having plain orange or brown text. The ideas will come to you as you get used to your software & the idea of scrapbooking.
I am new to this also & things that didn't make sense a month ago have brand new possibilities now.
