Question about scraplifting and publishing

What exactly is scraplifting? I've always thought I've been scraplifting if I see a layout I like and use the layout to create my own page, often with different papers and elements, but following the same sketch (or layout of photos and elements). However, someone recently told me that scraplifting is when you use the same paper, elements and sketch and that if you just follow the layout from another page but use different papers and such that it's just being *inspired* by that page. Which is correct?

Along those lines regarding publishing... let's say I find a sketch I like at Scrap Maps, and then I make a page based on that. If I want to submit that page for publication, do I give credit to Scrap Maps for the sketch? Should I not submit because I didn't make the page entirely myself? What if I've done a scraplift (my definition) of a page I like? I've never submitted them because I didn't feel it was my original work, but my friend says differently since I use different papers.

Thanks for your help!
Jeanne

my understanding of scraplifting is what you think it is, when you use someone else' LO and basically copy it with different stuff. I don't think that you have to be using everything the same to be considered a scraplift.

I don't know about crediting for publication, I have only scraplifted and posted in the forums and usually I include a link (if allowed) or a reference to the original LO, after I have gotten the original LO poster's permission. I am sure someone has a defined answer for this, but I would imagine that consulting the original person you scraplifted from before submitting a scraplifted layout for publication would be proper ettiquette, kwim?

Yes, thank you. I'm right. Okay, one more question regarding sketches. Can I submit a page for publication if I've lifted the sketch from a sketch site or magazine?

Jeanne...
Several of the major scrapbooking magazines often publish layouts that were "inspired" by content that appeared in the magzine...in fact they encourage folks to submit such work! Of course, it is always appropriate to credit ALL of your sources. Using Scrap Maps for an example....if my layout is based on one of Bree's sketches I will include her name and site url in my materials list. Just my two cents...I'm surely not an authority! <grin>

I agree with you too. I think "inspired" is if you pick up on just the colour combination of a LO, say, or use an interesting technique from it, or something at that level.
