Resizing and resolution ?

O.k, now I know that when you open a photo and drop it onto a 300dpi background, the photo's resolution (and therefore size) automatically changes to 300dpi also. Obviously if the photo is then enlarged considerably, it will lose quality, but is it possible to enlarge the picture slightly without it losing visible quality? Or should it ideally be kept at the same size as it initially appears on the layout when you first paste it there? What about making the photo smaller using the free transform handles - does this diminish the quality in any way?

When I upload my pics to the computer they always show up as some huge size of about 30 inches and only 72dpi. I just open them in DIP and change the resolution to 300 which makes the pic about 7 inches wide. I then drag it onto a background and it prints out fine.
I would have thought the pics coming from the camera would be 300dpi?? What resolution do others find their pics upload from their cameras??

Well, I'm not the total expert here but here's my take on it. What matters with the digital cameras is megapixels. That determines your resolution. So whether your computer reads it as 30 inches wide at 72 dpi or 7 inches wide at 300 dpi, it's all the same. I guess 72 dpi is kind of like the computer standard. And as far as enlarging the photo on the layouts, I suppose it would lose some quality if you made it larger. But depending on how much you increase the size would determine whether or not the photo would print out ok. I try to never let a bad photo get in the way of good design though. If the photo is poor quality, filter the heck out of it and enlarge it anyhow. You'll eventually find your way with it! oh, and as far as the question on making the photo smaller, that does not decrease the quality. I resize practically every photo, whether I make it bigger or smaller, to make it fit on my pages well. Hope this helps!

this is what i do...if i have a small picture and i enlarge it and it just looks horrible...i will either make it black and white...make a tad smaller...soften w/ a filter..put some sort of overlay over it so it looks like its suppose to be "distorted"....

i will just filter filter filter until it looks printable
