Downsampling - readability

Hi all.

I generally create 12 x 12 pages, but I have some that I want to give to someone in 8 x 8 format. If I downsample, what is the smallest size font at 12 x 12 that will still be readable at 8 x 8? Is there any easy (meaning, cheap) way to test this other than printing it out and hoping for the best?

Thanks,
Robin

well.. just try it? It doesn't get much cheaper than a sheet of photocopy paper in the printer. If you can read it find on the plain paper.. then go for it on photopaper.

The results will vary on the type of fonts you use, the original dpi of the layout, anti-aliasing on/off the dithering on the printer, etc.

Just give it a go and let us know how things turn out. Good Luck!

Maybe you could print only the text layer at the reduced size. That would save on your ink, but let you see exactly how the text will look.

Lol...If you reallly want to save the ink and paper.. you could always save the document and then just blow it up a few steps using your paint program.. if it starts to pixelate immediately.. it will when printed as well.

I still think just printing a sample is the easiest way to tell what it will look like... when printed.

i think cut and paste the section taht has the text, after it's been reduced to 8x8 and then print just that section is a good way to test. you could even print in black/white to save on colored photo ink. that is the best way i can think of. as long as it is at a high resolution, the print should be fairly easy to read even if it is a small font.

For photoshop I would do:
image>image size (change to 8x8)
then I would view it at 25%
(24% is actually the "print size", but in photoshop, the type will look jagged in sizes other than 25, 50, and 100.

Thanks for all the input. Getting it printed is actually kind of challenging - all the places near where I live do a crappy job, so I end up doing mail order. Hence the ask for "cheap". If I could trust the printers near me, I would get it printed in a heartbeat, but if it comes back looking bad, I won't know what the problem really is.

I'll try the 24% idea, thanks for the suggestion!

I would suggest you invest in a printer then.. you can pick one up for $100 that will do a great job.. then you are in control and can print whenever you want.
