paste as new layer or new selection?

Hi!

I've been trying out tutorials from various sites and notice that one place has me pasting as a layer and another has me pasting as a selection. What is the difference and advantage of doing it one way versus the other? When would I use one or the other? (I am using PSP 9)

Thanks,
Jen

Well this is just sort of a quick explaination...
When you add something as a new layer you retain the right to make a lot of future changes to that layer.
When you paste something as a selection to a already exsisting layer, you loose the ability to do almost anything to it, once you deselect that object (remove the marching ants) you can not even move that object individually for anything else on the layer. It moves everything around.
It is for the most part just easier to put things on their own layers, once you get used to doing it, it is really easy and a time saver. Because if you don't like something you pasted as a selection, at some point down the road you don't like just one object on that layer, it is impossible to remove that one item, unless you really like the UNDO command!! LOL

PS incase you miss your other post: if you would post your questions in the JASC Paint Shop Pro forum here it will be eaiser for those that use PSP to help you!! ;o)

I used to put everything in a different layer, but it got to be too complicated, especially after you hit the 20 layer mark (don't gasp - just putting brads or photocorners on all my pics would put me there without even trying). Plus, after y9u get everything in place, it takes an hour just to put the drop shadows in.

I will put similar items (like eyelets) together on a layer, or if I have assembled a compostie item (put ribbon and text on on a tag, for example), or all the letters of a title, unless they are overlapping. It isn't hard to select an item on a layer and move it independently of the others. Drop shadows are a LOT easier to manage, and if you need to move multiple items at once (for example, moving a photo and the photo corners), it is so much easier if they are all on the same layer.

Which just goes to show, there are as many opinions on the right way to do something as there are people to do it.
