I'm about 3 hours south of Traverse City but have visited there often and it's BEAUTIFUL! We usually go there during the summer so I can't attest to what it's like in the winter (I'd imagine lots of snow). You've gotta go to Don's Diner (I think that's the name). It's like the good old fashion drive-up diners with the best burgers and shakes. They've got tons of great places to eat and neat shops downtown. I love it up there.

I live North of Grand Rapids which is 2 hours & 20 minutes away from Traverse and we go there frequently winter & summer. It is basically a big resort town on two beautiful bays which are part of Lake Michigan. There is so much to do and see and it is a shoppers paradise with quaint little shops, a big mall, a smaller mall, not to mention all the quaint little towns around it like Sutton's Bay, Fish Town, Charlevoix and Petoskey. There are artisan shops and fabulous restaurants. There is snow & cold in winter as is fickle Michigan Winter. A lot of winter sports are available.

Kingsley is a very small drive through town just south of Traverse.
Here is a link to Traverse which doesn't really do it justice:

I see that you are from Texas....You will love the changes of seasons-spring and fall are awesomely beautiful!

It is awesome! You will love it there!

Jeanne, first thanks for your reply. i used to live in grand rapids area for about 13 years, and when i left there 23 years ago i swore i would never come back for more than a week at a time, LOL, well here i am considering not only coming back, but going even further north. i must be out of my mind. i hate cold and snow.

but, my daughter and i are looking for business opportunities and found a Curves establishment for sale in Kingsley and are considering it. we have run into a bit of a difficulty between the corporate office and the previous owner, so am not sure now what is going to happen. we were planning on going up on the 16th to look at it.

i also have to tell you than when i lived there one of my best friends was a "jeannie p" and every time i see a post or comment by you, i think of here. small world we live in after all.

thanks for your reply, maybe we will be "neighbors" in the future. heck, here in texas 3 hours is close, LOL.

I went to Interlochen Arts Camp and when parents would come to visit they'd take us to Traverse City. Over the summer, there are tons of concerts - not just classical - at the camp, by the students and many professional groups as well. Tons of variety, from Prairie Home Companion to Chicago to Shari Lewis.

The Holy Grail of dining in TC was Auntie Pasta's, they had the most amazing bread ever. Everyone would make their parents take them there and bring a loaf back for the cabin. I hope they're still around, it's been almost ten years...

I live in the Holland area, actually not far at all from Jeanne. Traverse is about a 3 hour drive for me but well worth it. And like Jeanne mentioned, there are tons of neat little towns on the way there. Sounds like a fun opportunity. Hope everything works out! You'll have to let us know.
