Yes, this is the result you are supposed to get as far as I can see. I think you need only reduce to 300 from 600 if you want to increase the size of the photo permanently on your computer (not just for your layout) and you could then use the new larger size for other things, like regular photo prints. But if it is just to go on your layout there seems to be no point in reducing again to 300, as it is resized automatically to 300dpi when you drop it onto a canvas of that size.
