Using up my Memory QUICK - organizing?

Okay so what do all you guys do to keep from just using gig after gig of space? When I make LOs or kits, I save the psd and the jpegs. BUt it uses huge amounts of space. What are you guys doing that I am not? Do you take certain things off your computer? Help!!!

Thanks
Kim

I just fill up the space, but then I've got a 225 GB HD. If you're done editing a .psd file, you can merge layers and I believe that makes them smaller files. Have you thought of purchasing an external hard drive? They are spacious and fairly inexpensive (depends on the size) and would free up your onboard hard drive for your programs and stuff.

Well, I went crazy before I bought a new computer with a 350 gigabyte hard drive. However, that said, I have an 80 gigabyte external hard drive that I save my files to. I also have a DVD burner and burn a DVD every so often. And almost daily I burn my new creations to a CD.

I save not just the pngs and jpegs, but also the PSP files that I used to create a kit or layout.

Basically, I'm a hard-drive hog. *oink, oink*

I burn to CD or DVD around every month or so depending on how much I have accumulated in that time. I then remove all but the last half dozen that I have worked on.

When I buy/download kits, after unzipping them I move the zip file to a folder in My Documents>files to burn>kits and it is this which I then save on CD/DVD.

I have a huge amount of space on my new computer but made a promise to myself that I would keep it tidy!! So far so good.

Cool

I download everything to CD's. My biggest problem is deciding what order and how to put it on them. If I download something from on a website or on here for instance I used to just go through a category download everything that fit on a CD burn it to a CD and then move on to the next CD for that category. That doesn't always work, especially now when things have moved categories and more categories have shown up ! Oh well I just get to go back and make adjustments and have something else to keep me busy since I don't have a job to keep me busy right now we'll see what happens when I start school again next month ?

You know, Photoshop 7.0 and later versions come with a great feature for making "Contact Sheets" of images. I just love it for organizing my stuff that I burn to CD...here is what I do....
1. Make a new folder on the desktop called "Burn to CD"
2. Put all the folders and files that I want to burn to CD into this folder
3. Open PS > File > Automate > Contact Sheets >Browse (to the folder on my desktop) > check the box that says "include all Subfolders"
4. Fill out the rest of the information:
Document: width 8" / hight 10" / resolution 200 px / RGB
Thumbnails: across first / columns 5 / rows 6
Font: Arial / 6pt
5. Press OK and watch PS make everyone of my files into a thumbnail of 200 px in size and place on a 8x10 size "paper" or layer(s). With my specs above it will put 30 thumbnails to a page (of course it can make them smaller if you choose).
6. Then print each one out, 3 hole punch it, put it in a binder or folder.
7. Burn the desktop folder to CD and put it in the folder with all your print outs!!

WaLa!! Now you have an awesome way of reviewing what is on that CD, without maxing out your computer space!!! BTW, each thumb will have the name of the file below it (cool huh?). So when you want to use file abcd.jpg well you just pop it in the computer and run a "search" on it for abcd.jpg and easy as pie you will have it right there!!

Does any one else think this is such a cool way to organize your files as I do??? Wow, it has helped me so much. And I acutally prefer to browse through pages and pages of thumbs (on paper) than to look at the computer screen for an hour looking for that right background or element!

Hope that helps. PM me if you have any questions.

Yazo

Periodically burn to dvd. Actually, to more than one as backups. Don't ever want to go back to little drives and no backup! We have over a Terabyte of storage (networked) and still run out of room!
