how to brush

I have probably a silly question about brushes. I am new to all this digi scrapping stuff (lovin' every minute of it!), and new to Photoshop. My question is: when I use a brush, I (1) apply the brush to my layout; (2) there are "marching ants" around my brush (3) I go to edit > fill selection and fill the ants with whatever color I have chosen (4) and then deselect. This seems like a lot of steps. Is there an easier way to use/apply brushes and brush strokes? When I do it this way, it seems to work, but it sure seems like a lot of steps, and I thought there might be an easier way. I figured you guys would know.
THanks for your help!
Mari

You're using the selection brush instead of the brush tool. On the tool bar the brush tool looks just like a brush while the selection brush looks like a brush with marching ants behind it. If you're having trouble finding the brush tool you can just use the keyboard shortcut B and the brush tool will be active.

Also you might find this tutorial on brush basics helpful.

HTH!
