Question help in creating a charm element

Hello _
Im new to SBB and digi scrapping. I'm learning photoshop. I followed the tutorial from this site (by Jennifer Ditterich) on creating an Alphabet charm. It worked fine, except when I saved it. How do you save a created element, so that when you pull it up in the future, you don't have the "blank background" and you have just the element so the element can be placed anywhere on the layout? How do you get rid of the background area? I don't know if it's when I save the final project, or when I am creating the different layers. Any help is highly appreciated! This was a fun tutorial otherwise. Thanks.
Mari

You need to save the final product as a png. The png format will support the transparency and you will not have the black background.

Hi Mari!

When you are finished creating your element merge all of the layers down until you only have the background and the element layers.

Then delete the background layer by right clicking on your the layer in your layer pallette.

Save your element as a .png so that the background doesn't come back later. The PNG keeps the background transparent. Good luck!

Oh, thanks so much. I will try that. When I finished the element, I merged the layers so I only had ONE layer (background?). There were no other layers in the palette. Did I do that right? Also, I think I saved it as a .psd file. I will do what you said and save it as a .png. I am struggling with Photoshop trying to learn it, I am getting there! Learning a little bit more each day.
Mari
PS Almost ALL of what I have learned has been from this site. I really like it here.
