Exclamation Problem with knowing who to credit!

Sooo I finally got around to sorting and organizing all of my files. Problem is I put them into folders labeled "Papers" "Layovers" "Ribbons and Bows" etc.

I thought the file names would have the designer name. Most of them seem to, I assumed that was the standard, it makes sense that it would be. Well so now I have papers just named Paper 9.. etc. What do I do about crediting these?

Not much you can do at this point. Most folders will have the kit name and designer name, but I not all the individual files do. I prefer to keep my files in kits and use an organizing program like PS Album or Picasa to "tag" my elements in categories such as "backgrounds" and so on. This allows me to search for the elements I want, but keeps things easy to credit because the individual files are still with other files in the kit, including the terms of use for that kit (which often has good info if you should have questions about a kit).

So I don't want to cheat someone out of a credit, if I'm unsure, do I just say "Paper not mine, lost the information" or something? I don't want to come off like I'm trying to take credit for someone else's work, ya know?

And I don't use Picasa because I keep my files all stored on a server, and Picasa won't pick up the network places, they have to be on my PC and I'm trying to conserve space on my local hard drive

At this point, I'd say you'll just have to say paper - unknown. You might add that if anyone knows who made the paper or element whose author is unknown to contact you so you can add it to the credits.

Originally, I tried organising as you do and ran into the same problem. Took me AGES to relink stuff with the creators (and haven't completely succeeded yet but about 90% done). I decided to use the file organiser method so I could use the same system as Miss Kim. What I can suggest is in future before you break down the kit into the elements or start filing them according to their nature that you do a batch rename (any program, even Windows will do this for you) to rename them to include the creator's name if the creator has not done so in the first place. That way, as you assumed, the name will always be there for you. I know, horse is already out of the barn but good thought for going forward

Unfortunately some people still only add their name/initials to the Folder and not all the elements. If people named all files correctly this problem wouldn't occur. All you can do is credit as "paper - unknown".

Before I knew the importance of saving the designer's name I did the same thing. When I posted a lo with an unknown in it I just asked if anyone knew who made the element please PM me and I was surprised how quickly someone responded. I am reorganizing everything according to designer and kits, then I will tag all the catagories of elements. I sure wish I had done that from the start.
