Removing backgrounds in photos

I want to remove the background in this lovely photo of my grandson and his new baby sister, can anyone help? I have tried cutting it out but the edges aren't great even if I blur them, are there any other ways of removing bits in the background? I have DIP and PSP 7. I do have Adobe Photoshop but am not very good with it!!! TIA.

In psp7 if you choose the l***o tool...smart edge...trace around the subject....click selection...invert....then either go to blur or cut...that should work for what you wanted..

anymore help or more indepth just email me..

Susan Mc,
Please, please, please tell me how to blur the background like you did. I'm fairly new to PS7 and this is the biggest problem I'm having. I've tried doing tutorials and it comes out looking awful every time.
Thanks,
sandi

first, SELECT the area you want blurred. i ususally use the l***o with a 2-3 pixel feather, or the magic wand.

Depending on the photo, it could be easier to select what you don't want blurred then go to

SELECT>INVERSE

then go to the top menu to:

FILTER>BLUR>GAUSSIAN

play with the slider until you get the amount of blur that you like.

HTH!
