Need camera help, please?

I am getting ready to get a new camera. I have a canon a70 3.2 mp 3x zoom. I am just not getting the quality pics that i want with it. I want something with lots more zoom...like 10x. I want at least 5 megapixel. I am looking at the canon digital rebel and the kodak easy share dx7590. My brother has a sony dsc- f707. I am not sure if they sell that one anymore. I like to point and shoot. I don't really know how to do anything manually, although I would love to learn. What do I need to get??? I, also looked at the nikon d70. Any ideas would be oh so helpful. thanks, stephanie

well I have both the Kodak7590 and the nikon d70..I think they are both excellent cameras with lots of features but different uses. I use the kodak when I don't wanna bring around a huge camera and just want to take snap shots..I use the d70 for my portrait work. The kodak DOES have manual settings so you can control so you can use it to learn more about how cameras work and move up to a digital SLR if you so choose later. The most important thing for you to know is that by moving up to a higher megapixel camera and more zoom doesn't necc mean that you will automatically get better pictures. The most important thing in photography is LIGHT. You HAVE to have enough of it to take a good picture. A lot of people (not meaning you..but just people in general) think that digital cameras have some kind of magic that can make anyones pictures clear and sharp all the time! That's just not so. Specifically using a longer lense...like the 10x optical zoom. You will need more light the more you zoom..so indoors low light pictures zoomed are going to be difficult on any camera if you don't know how to change the manual settings to make the most of your optics. ANyways didn't mean to babble to much...just thought I would let you know a few things about the camera you asked about and general info if you have any questions let me know and I'll try to answer I'm just answering quick before I go get my hubby from work so sorry I didn't explain in more detail.

I have a Nikon Coolpix 5700, and the newer 8400 and such cameras are classified as "prosumer" meaning they're for consumers with pro features. They can go completely manual. The DSLRs are great with no shutter lag, but they also have a lot of drawbacks. If you get one, you'll still need to get a little point and shoot so you don't look like a photojournalist on war detail just to take pics of your little ones at the McPlayland!
try www.dpreview.com and look up the cameras you want to purchase in their review section

Smile Simple advice

Hi,

My only two suggestions are that if you have already purchased a lot of Canon accessories you should consider staying with Canon. I have a 4mp Canon G2 and in a few weeks I plan to get the Canon DSLR EOS D20. Part of the reason I am getting it, is because I can use the same batteries, battery charger, and memory cards as I am using now. May not sound like much, but those extras do add up $ wise.

The other suggestion is that I think 5mp is still too low. You will probably outgrow it VERY soon. At minimum, I would say 6, but really I would shoot (no pun intended! ) for 8.

Just my advice as a novice.

ABout the megapixels..I honestly don't really think that most people need more then 4 or 5 megapixels. Did you know a 4 megapixel print can be printer up to a 20 x 30 inch print and not lose photographic quality? A 6 mapixel can print up to a 30 x 40 inch print. Honestly most people will never need that. I think I would look at getting the highest megapixel you can with the specs you need, and don't worry if it's not the highest out there. There are stil professional photographers (many many MANY i know) shooting with a 4 megapixel camera. There is so much more to it then just the megapixels. It depends on the ccd size and quality..the optics...the specs...if you can change your settings or if it's all a point and shoot.

Just look around..go hold a bunch of cameras...see what feels good in your hands and seems to have the features you are looking for. It's all about figuring out what YOU need.

I agree with Rapsdy....

... on one hand about the fact that mp alone is not the reason to buy a particular camera. I LOVE!!! my G2! In fact just yesterday someone yesterday commented that I must have an excellent camera to take the pictures that I did. 4 mp is enough for printing most of the time. However, where I find I want more mp is when I want to crop. When I print out some crops the quality is just not great, ok, but not great. But again, Rhapsdy is right. (Cograts again to you for your win last night in the speed scrap!)
