Question What to do: Digial Scrapbooking vs. Manual Paper Scrapbooking?

I'm new here as of today and I'm torn between what to do.

For years I've been creating scrapbooks the now considerd "old-fashiioned" way. Even though I have a digital camera and do photo editing to my photos first, I use other paper products I purchase (backgrounds, stickers, die cuts, etc) to combine with my photos to create my pages. I even draw/doodle art work on my pages. My friends and I are able to get together and have scrapbooking sessions because I can carry all my accessories with me.

Now, I come across these beautiful digital scrapbooking pages on this site and think its something I want to do but feel torn to leave my old method.

Do you actually do all your scrapbooking using the digital technique printing an entire scrapbook album or do you combine methods.

Any advice on how others are using this technique would help me feel more comfortable with a diretion to take regarding digital scrapbooking.

Thanks!

Welcome to the digital world of scrapping and to SBB. I personally only do digital but there are so many ways that people combine the best of the two worlds. Some print their layouts at 8 by 8 and then place on a 12 by 12 and use embellishments on the other area. Others have both digital albums and traditional albums. That is what is so great about the digi world, you are only limited by your imagination.

Welcome to SBB! I know exactly how you feel - I only started digi-scrapping last winter at this time. I would try a few techniques then decide it was working out - but I persisted because I felt I really wanted to teach myself. I went total digital in less than a few months after giving it my all! I am addicted and will probably never paper scrap again. I feel this is much cheaper, certainly less messier and you don't have to ruin actual photos. However, many people still combine both paper and digital!

Welcome!
I scrap my digital layouts 8x8 (because of printing costs mostly) and put them into a 12x12 album. I decorate the border a bit but I am not too crafty with paper so it is mostly to add journaling or dates that might have been left out.

Don't forget your dates and journaling!!! I have left out more than I thought I did and with my horrible memory is was a long process to organize all the layouts that I printed.

Hi, I have been paper scrapbooking for years and just started digital scrapbooking in the last couple of months. I love both and do both. I love the social part of paper scrapbooking and get together with my friends at crops. I can't digital scrapbook with my friends but I can digital scrapbook at home and I don't have to make a mess. I can walk away from it and tend to my kids and I don't have to worry about little hands getting into my stuff (I have 3 young kids). I plan to do both. I paper scrapbook in 12x12 and digitally scrapbook in 8x8. It works for me.

Hi, welcome to SBB! I paper scrapped for a while, but I had a very difficult time getting everything out and ready and actually getting something done with a young child to lok after.

I know that some people do pages with both digital and paper elements, maybe if you are worried about jumping right in you go that route for a while.

Smile I'm just exactly about where you are

Traditionally been scrapping for about 5 years now.... but investigating the digital. Have been having a lot of fun (and some agony) learning Photshop Elements 3, and have created 4 layouts... that I now am looking into printing. I can't give up the 12 x 12 format - nothing else really seems right for me... so I either have to get the 12 x 12 printer (probably) or upload to a printing service. There are lots of posts about that. But I know exactly how you feel... I like them both. And, of course, I already "own it all" traditionally! What will I do with it if I switch compeletly over??? Plus, I just got my husband to re-vamp an unused room into a scrap room!!! I also have one monthly class with a group of friends I don't want to miss out on. So, I've decided that if I print my layouts, there is no reason I can't do both and put both kinds in the same album. I do like the no mess, leave at any point part of the digital, and with all the stuff I've downloaded from this superb site, plus all the info I've gotten from the forums, digital is certainly very appealing. I will say, however, that if I thought the layouts would take less time... I was wrong!!! Of course, it could still be the high learning curve of the graphics software world, but even when I "master" that, don't think it will be a whole lot of time savings. I just wanted to let you know you are not alone in your quandry!

I do both. My youngest son's album is completely digital, but my other two children have traditionally scrapped albums since most of their photos were not taken with a digital camera. I have scanned some of our heritage family photos, but didn't do my teens' pictures since I have their albums already caught up in paper. I keep an 8 x 8 digital family album and a 12 x 12 paper family album. Sometimes I just have to cut some paper! I also like to paper scrap our Disney vacation albums since I started using a particular kind of album with black paper for them years ago.

Digital seems more practical to me because now I get right to scrapping my photos. They don't languish in boxes! But there is still an allure to all the gorgeous paper and 3D embellishments!

I was never too into the social side of paper scrapping as a lot of women are, but I understand that need for community. Having other SBBers to share with has really been fun.

Anyway, it certainly doesn't have to be either/or! You can do both. I'm sure most of us started out by simply printing out our journaling or editing photos. It's really up to you how far you want to go! Maybe you might want to keep an 8 x 8 digital album for only specific kinds of photos--landscape or artshots or single photos that you treat digitally with dramatic effects--and keep the 12 x 12 paper album for your traditional style layouts. Just a thought! Keep it fun!
