heritage photos -- what to do with the paper ones?

This may seem like a silly question, but I'm very curious what others have done here. I've just started scrapping, digitally of course, and I've started by doing layouts of old family photos for a couple of memory albums. I scan in the photos and make my pages on the computer, and print the layouts for my album.

But what to do with the actual old photos? I don't want to end up paper scrapping them, too, but it doesn't feel right just putting them back into the big box of old photos. I've thought about making plain storage albums with the original photos mounted on acid free cardstock in the same groupings as the digital scrapbook, but without all the embellishments, printed papers, journalling, etc. That way they're better protected than in a big box, and it would be fairly easy to locate a specific photo if needed. Come to think of it, that album would also be a good place to keep the backup CD(s) of the page layouts and scanned photos, too.

So far I haven't done anything, 'cause I want to start with one system and stick with it.

Other Ideas for organizing and safeguarding them, please?!

TIA! Beth

Sounds like ....

You answerd your own question LOL. Another good idea now that you have them scaned in is see if any other family member would like a copy of you disk that has the scaned photos in it. Oh just one thing I dont think i would mount the photos. Not usualy a good ldea with older photos. But there are tonz of photo safe page protectos on the market today that have pockets jsut the right size for a photo. That might be a better idea

I like the photo safe pockets and then into a photo safe box or folder - that's what I plan to do with mine. I don't really want them handled a lot so plan to store them which I'm torn about too because I believe photos are meant to be looked at and enjoyed - oh me oh my what a quandry!

This may sound totally obsessive!

With my heritage photos I plan to do them both digitally and via paper. I will only do the most important ones to me in using both mediums. The other heritage photos will only be done via paper. However, whenever I do a paper LO with heritage pics I plan to only use a scanned in copy. The originals will be kept, like Franham said, in photo safe pockets, in a photo safe box and in a safe deposit box so it is off site in case of a fire. I also currently keep a copy of my digital LO's hard drive in a safe deposit box (I rotate it about every one to two weeks.)

I've been paper scrapping my heritage photos, usually at the same time that I'm doing digital layouts of the photos. But now after reading some of the responses, I'm thinking that maybe I should re-think my process and put the photos in photo safe protectors instead. Hmm... What a dilemma.

Lovin' This Thread!!

I am at the beginning of what I foresee to be a huge project - which is organizing, digitizing, and sharing all the old family photos and documents I currently have in my possession.

I don't consider myself the owner of these items. I see myself as the "keeper of the collection" for this generation. I got them from my dad, and he got them from his aunt. The next generation will have a keeper also at some point, and I'm doing my best to "groom" my daughter for this. I also want to preserve the original "concept", if that is the right word, for many things. In other words, I don't think it is fair to inflict my tastes and ideas onto generations to come, since I am only the current keeper.

Since I've never been a paper scrapper, I've not had much dilemma as far as paper scrapping in addition to the digital LO's. But I have wanted to digitize things so they can be easily shared with my brothers and other family members. But I also want to preserve the original "concept", if that is the right word, for many things. I have some paper items that should just be printed out all by themselves, or at least preserved digitally as a high-res image that someone else can print as they see fit.

I can make myself a digital LO in addition to the "duplication". I have a couple of these LO's in my gallery. I can also either provide the LO on a CD to family members or print them a copy also. Another couple of CD's in addition to the backups I do for off-site safekeeping isn't difficult to do.

I have TONS of old letters and at this point I have put them into sleeves and into a 3-ring notebook. They can't ever be replaced and I think back into a box is a shame, although some items are too large for this. I got them as originals, and I want to keep them as close to original as I can - thus I would be totally against paper scrapping if I were a paper-scrapper. If I were really organized - which I am trying to be with this project, I would cross-reference each digital LO with the original items.

As I work on this project, I am also working on the genealogy of the family - which of course is another entirely huge project. When I am all done with everything, I will have a book to print - probably several hundred pages.

Now that I've rambled on a bit too much, I have a question for those of you doing "heritage" scrapping: Do you find this type of scrapping to be different from the everyday life scrapping? What are your goals with a LO?

Do we need a user group of heritage scrappers - or maybe if there was enough response, Amy/Kristie might give us our own little forum section?

Thanks for listening. (oh and I didn't proof this - so watch out for typos)

I like your thinking...

..of being only the keeper for now and not inflicting your taste. In my case, I agree and at the same time disagree. First off, as I kind of alluded to in my response, I want to keep the originals seperate more so b/c I am very scared of fire/water damage (my apt building caught on fire once and it REALLY changed my perspective on being prepared), so in that regard I feel like the keeper for the next generation and don't want to change anything with the original (especially with pics of extended family).

However, both of my parents are now deceased and I am the only child. Due to this fact there are certain pics that I definitely want to scrap via paper (after making a HIGH-res digital copy) because I want them to have my "tastes" on them. Why? Because the "tastes" are actually going to be expressions of the memories that they invoke and those are memories are mine alone and it is the only way I can think of to tell my future children about the grandparents they will never meet. Does that make sense? These paper LO's I, once I am finished with them, I will scan in so that I have a digital copy and it is this copy that I will keep with me in my apt. The original paper LOs will go in the safe deposit box with the other original pics.

Finally, I find this type of scrapping the hardest: the pics still make me very emotional and I want to do my best job so sometimes I have a hard time starting because I don't want to make a mistake.

P.S. I do agree with you that it does become a HUGE project!

As I scan my old torn weathered heritage photos, they go off-site into a safe deposit box. I agree that these heritage photos should be available to look at so I do have the restored copies at home for my family to look at.
