Try this as long as it is working for you now:
File>Preferences then down in the list Organizer, click on the file format exclusions button and check all of the file extensions or check the ones that you don't use.
I still think it is a organizer issue, but don't know for sure. I am wondering if you have a certain file that PSP is hanging up over. I know I have read that others have had issue with certain Mac type files and their PSCS programs.
Have you downloaded any kits that have MAC files??? Oh I remember now they had a "." period at the beginning of the file names. I had problems with those and ACDSee not like them either and it would crash/freeze it.
On that main Preferences window I only have the last two choices selected also: "Show file...", "Allow cataloging..."

I ended up having to delete those ".abc_macfiles.jpg" everytime I opened a folder in ACDSee where they were located the program would just sit and think forever. I couldn't rename them and I couldn't even delete them through acdsee, I had to use windows explore to remove them from my computer.

Hopefully this is what is making your psp hang up, I bet it is trying to understand and catalog those files.
Glad we are here and can help, as Jane said I don't think this is a PSP issue except it is having a issue with certain Mac files.
