Automatically Compresses Images? (PNG files become PIC files??)

Corel Paint Shop Pro is suddenly compressing my images without me asking it to.

If I select to save it in png, the file name will say image1.pic, instead of image1.png. I selected options in the save box, and it has some compression options, but there is nothing to click to STOP it from compressing, just options on how I'd like it compressed.

I am extremely frustrated, as I use this program nearly every day as a photographer, and I don't want to have to figure out what is the higher version of the file I actually want so I can save as THAT image file, so that it will end up really as the one I wanted. Does this make sense?

I want .PNG files so I have to save them initially as .PPM files so that it will automatically compress to .PNG files... IT SHOULD be saving as .PNG files when I SELECT .PNG files, like it always has. BUT IT ISN'T!

I took a screencap of the save as... box:

Hmm, this is most odd. The .pic extension is associated with Lotus pic or or PC Paint according to my File Association box.

I'm not entirely sure why you save as .ppm files first? Can you not immediately save as .png? I have tried saving on both formats in X2 and there doesn't seem to be a problem with it saving as .png.

The only thing I can suggest is check the File Association box: select png and then click Extensions to see if somehow .pic has been put in there as an extension. Unlikely, but you never know...

In your file format Associations do you have .png selected as an associated file type?

I see that .pic is right above the .png in my list. I wonder if a file type is not associated if it will pic the next one up on the list (because they are in alphabetical order) I don't have .pic checked as being assocaited and yet I can see it in my choices when I do a save.

oops just read Jane's response... Great minds think alike!

What makes you think it is compressing your file, if I choose to save as a .pic I do not get any options to compress that file type (My options) button is grayed out.

If I save as a .png I get options to optimize it. If you don't want it optimized or compressed don't use the Option button, just pick .png in the save dialog box and click save.
I also don't undestand why you are saving them as .ppm files first either, you can save anything as a .png. Then main benefit of .png files is that they will hold and display a transparent area around a image. But for a image that covers the canvas from side to side it really isn't nessecary using that file format unless it is something different you are doing with them.

I do immediately click .png, but it will save as a .pic even though I selected .png.

If I select .jpg, it saves isntead as a .jpg2.

If I select .ppm, it saves as a .png.

It's all f*cked up, and I honestly did not consciously changed anything. I was in the middle of going through photos of mine and many of them saved fine, until suddenly this happened out of nowhere!

Maybe I could uninstall and reinstall the program and it will work normally. I will get back to you all if that works!
