Metadata error

I just bought PSPX2 and I just love it! As an added bonus, I can now tag which I couldn't before. But it seems I can only tag jpg files...backgrounds, photos, etc. When I tried to tag pspimages or pngs within a kit, I get the error "Storing metadata to the selected file types is not supported" whatever that means. Bummer. I had hoped to tag everything in my kits so I could easily find what I need. Is this feasable feature that Corel programmers could update in the future?? Does anyone know if Adobe does this kind of tagging? Thanks!!

Lynn, I honestly don't know.
1) I would assume that since it is actually called Paint Shop Pro PHOTO X2 now days that maybe smart corel decided that it could only be used to organize PHOTO'S!
2) Next I would have assumed that Corel would have had the smarts to possibly create their new organizer so that it would have at least included the ability to tag it's own native formats!
Are you familiar with the Corel PSPX2 newsgroups? If you are you should ask this question there.
If not holler back and I can post it there for you and see what kind of answers we get!

Thanks Tracey for your quick response. No, I do not belong to newsgroups so if or when you have the time to post the question, I'd love to see what others have to say. I'll watch this thread for answers. Thanks again!!

Hi Lynn, ok I posted your questions so now we will just wait until we hear something.
While there it is always fun reading all the tips and tricks to learning a new version. I would seriously suggest that all PSP users subscribe to these newsgroups. some morning while having coffee I just sit and read through the posts. I am ALWAYS amazed at the info that is available to us.
I can't help you with how to set up your email to read the newsgroups, I am using OE and never had a problem whatsoever subscribing to them, but then again I have used newsgroups since way back when!
Here is the link where you can pick out the PSPX2 newsgroup!

Trust me it is worth everyones time to join these newsgroups!

Lynn here are their replies, at this point I am not 100% certain myself what this all means to you. But hopefully it will steer you in the right direction.

It depends how tagging is done. PSP now supports IPTC tags in
JPEG files.

I'm surprised that IPTC information can't be stored in the
PspImage format, though I would expect that it isn't supported
in PNG. I would have the person double-check the PspImage
format.

You can add keywords to images in PSP but they reside in the
organizer database and not in the image itself. I believe that
Adobe does just the same. In PSP you can add a description to
the PspImage format using Image > Image Information. This is
also retained in a few other formats (e.g. TIF, GIF), though
not PNG. The PNG format does support something called a Text
Chunk. You can add these to your PNG files with TweakPNG or a
similar program. That doesn't mean the text would be searchable
in some program but it would serve as a note describing the file.

Another reply:

Well a similar post this week informed me That the tags are added to exif
Where as My Keywords fused for searches are In a data base. That certainly
exclude's PNG from tags But dose not explain PSP

"I am adding this part, maybe try using keywords on your .pspimage and .png's instead of tags?

PSP writes into JPEGs too, now it has IPTC support. I don't believe
the poster's report that it doesn't also write to PspImage files.
I think - though I don't know - that there are two ways to specify
keywords, depending on PSP and/or Browsanizer version. I'm ready
to be corrected on that. Which is the Adobe component that allows
you to retrieve images based on combinations of keywords they do
or do not contain? What does it do for formats like BMP or PCX that
don't store keywords internally?

Thank you for posting all this info. I followed your link and there's a TON of info out there in the newsgroup!! So thank you for the link!

I am however, having trouble understanding two things... 1) what is IPTC? and 2) what is the difference between keywords and tags?

I found this info with a google search: NAA/IPTC data is a method of storing textual information in images. It was developed for press photographers who need to attach information to images when they are submitting them electronically but it is useful for all photographers. It provides a standard way of storing information such as captions, keywords, location and captions. Because the information is stored in the image in a standard way this information can be accessed by other IPTC aware applications.

I am not sure the difference between a keyword and a tag and how the program uses them.
Maybe this: "You can add keywords to images in PSP but they reside in the organizer database and not in the image itself."

and maybe the TAGS reside in the image info itself...?
