Photograph Restoration -

Ive been restoring an old photograph for a customer and Im wondering what the critique would be. Im new to psp8 and Im still trying to figure it out.
Ive got to say that my fave tool at this point is 'clone'.
With this photo my scanner was too small and I had to scan it in two phases, then cloned the two together.
To see the larger picture just click on the pic in the album.
Thanks in advance for any critiquue good or bad. /

Hello and Welcome to SBB!! You did a fantastic job I feel on that photo. Wonderful how you were able to restore it so clearly and in a black and white!

If you're going to be doing a lot of restoration, I'd like to recommend a book called, Photoshop Restoration and Retouching by Katrin Eisman if you don't own it already. While you are working with PSP, it should still help you some. I purchased my copy (edition 2) back a few years ago when I was working with PSP 7,8,9. The Eismann book is full of examples just like yours. I purchased edition 3 a while back just because I bumped into it for a cheap price at Sams Club.

While I don't mean to sway people to another site, again if "Restoration" is your thing, you might want to check out the "restoration form" on the following site:

http://www.retouchpro.com/forums/

You can post your work (before and after) and get some good tips from experts and novices. People post photos with some major problems to them and members try their hand at helping and give sugguestion (and post their own versions).

I've forgotten about everything in PSP these days, but your photo would be a snap to color correct and fix in CS 3.

(Would probably attempt to darken up the front part of the train, maybe even the left side alittle. The sky appears to be blown out. Don't know if there is any kind of contrast in the sky to work with. Am sure you could get a ton of good comments at RetouchPro)

If you can view the Eismann book you might find it of value. HAVE FUN!

Oh my! wow, thanks for all the nice words! I worked very hard on this and yes I am very interested in photograph restoration. My mom is our families genealogist and thru her Ive had to restore all the family photos...lotsa practice considering most of our family is shoebox collectors..

Ive already had it printed via snapfish to see exactly what it would look like and found it was a bit grainy so I had to go back and fix that. but now It looks fairly good to me.

As far as the black and white comment I guessed that was what I should have been in the beginning before age took its tole, but now I'm thinking maybe a sepia tone would look more original. but I'm not that familiar as of yet. I started my site long ago, but have been mostly learning web mastering..lol.. and not enough about actual photo restoration history.
I guess next Ill check out the link given above..hehe..thanks

and again thank you all for such a wonderful critique! it does so mean a lot to me.
