How to save .png files as transparent?

I just spent a lot of time creating an alphabet set and saved them as .png files. When I re-opened them, they weren't transparent. Ok, so I went to the .png optimizer and re-saved them, choosing 16.7 Million colors/single color transparency/colors that match white. That made them transparent, but when I put them on top of a red background, the red shows through any portion of the alpha that contained the color white.

Anyone know the "best" way of saving .png files in PSP8 and have them be transparent?

Ernie, I don't think you use DIP, bu in that, I would place the alpha on a layer of white, make that layer transparent, lock them together, and then ave as a png. Does this sound like it might help?

That's pretty much what I did. I created the alpha on two layers, the bottom layer being transparent with the top layer containing only the alpha. Then I merged the two layers and the resulting image was still transparent. Then I saved them as a .png file. When I opened them back up they had a white background! So I ran them through the .png optimizer to try to get them back to transparent. Now they are transparent everywhere that contained white!! I spent quite a lot of time creating this set and now they are ruined. I guess it's back to the drawing board. I have never figured out .png files. Everthing else works perfectly - except for .png files. (And it's not just me, I opened up some alphas I had downloaded recently and about half of them weren't transparent!!!)

Thanks for trying to help!

SimplyRed, do you have all the patches for PSP8? It doesn't sound like you do because your .png's are goofed up!
http://scrapbook-bytes.com/chat/show...highlight=PSP8
Go here http://www.jasc.com/support/updates/default.asp and fill in your info and download the patch it will self install and then your .png's should work just fine.

You said that about 1/2 of the alpha .png's you open up are not transparent. But you apparently can see some of them as having a transparent background? And these are all .png files, none of them were .psp formats were they? Odd that you can see some of them but not all of them.

Make sure they are on a transparent background. Then go to the png optimizer, and instead of choosing the "matches"
choose "alpha channel transparency" and
"existing image and layer transparency."

I use PSP8 for almost all of my designing.

This was true only with one download of alphas. I think the person who created them didn't have any more experience with .pngs that I did. I normally have no trouble seeing .pngs as transparent, only with CREATING them as transparent. I'll go to the sites you suggested and make sure my PSP8 is up to date (well, as up to date as two versions old software can be ).

Thanks!

I'm giving this a try immediately!! I was definitely choosing "matches" and it was definitely doing exactly that. Thanks!! I worked so hard on that alpha set (all capital letters, all small letters, all numbers and most punctuation!!!) and now they are useless. Oh, well. No one said learning would be easy.

Thanks. I'm going to conquer this one way or the other!!

And glad to see another PSP8 user!! Don't be surprised to get the occasional PM from me!!
