Merging layers

Is there any way to merge a layer with the layer under it and have it take that shape?

If I have a flower shape on my layout, and I want to apply a paper to it, is there a shortcut to merge the two layers? Or do I have to select the flower shape and cut/paste with the paper?

Thanks!

use merge down. it will merge the layer you are on with the one right below it.

to get the bottom layer to take the shape of the layer above it, i'm pretty sure you have to do the magic wand selection then cut and paste. Wish it were as easy as merging down Maybe Tracey, our resident PSP expert, will chime in with an easier way!

No Kelly you are right in saying that by merging layers, one layer CAN'T take on the shape that you have on another layer. You need to use the magic wand select your shape then highlight the layer where the paper is that you want to use, invert the selection and cut. This will leave you with your exact shape filled with your paper.
Merging layers basically just makes it so that you can't move individual items around it (paper & elements) becomes one image and makes them all present on just the one layer. If I merge layers it is almost always merge visible.
