blur the background

How do I make only the background blurry? I tried to do this by using freehand selection (and then invert selection) but it's hard to make it exact and the area arounf the focus object is not blurred.

try this tutorial - it talks about the different blur features.

I've used the magic wand to try and select my object and the gaussian blur feature to try and blur a busy back ground - if you don't set the blur strength to high this works ok - the higher the blur, the more obvious it is where you miss places. HTH

Here is a depth of field tutorial from Corel:
http://www.corel.com/content/pdf/pai...h_of_field.pdf
Here is a page that if you read down a ways on the right hand side Ron has many tutorials to either achieve a blurred background or other ways to create depth of filed in a photo.

My favorite one: make sure to read through all the pages!!
