Play and Play some more!! What I found that worked the best for me was I created a bunch of .png image files at various sizes with the inked, grunged, distressed look on them. Then I can place these on any background paper or element, I can change the color of them, the opacity and size them to fit.
How I got the images for my .png's? I found interesting free stock photo's of scratched rusted metal, tree bark, ice crystals, moss ect. and then fiddled with the threshold setting in PSP to get a nice altered B&W image. Then using your select tool select either the White area or black area and cut that away. Now you will have a transparent background with some really cool distressed areas left to apply to your papers.
