adding distressed edges to background paper

Does anyone know how I can add distressed edges to a background paper? I just started trying to design papers myself but I can't really figure this one out. Any help is appreciated.

I've been fooling around with brushes the other day, but when I try to get a distressed look, it just alway looks crooked. Do you have any advice on how to get it better?

Play and Play some more!! What I found that worked the best for me was I created a bunch of .png image files at various sizes with the inked, grunged, distressed look on them. Then I can place these on any background paper or element, I can change the color of them, the opacity and size them to fit.
How I got the images for my .png's? I found interesting free stock photo's of scratched rusted metal, tree bark, ice crystals, moss ect. and then fiddled with the threshold setting in PSP to get a nice altered B&W image. Then using your select tool select either the White area or black area and cut that away. Now you will have a transparent background with some really cool distressed areas left to apply to your papers.
