how to remove background of pic/make blurry

Hi!

I have some photos that I love, but the background clutters things up. Is there a way to geat rid of the background all together or at least make it blurry so the person shows up better.

Thanks,
Jen

PS I use PSP 9

Use the lasso tool to select your subject, then you can invert the selection and do what you want with the background.

Here's a good example of the background deleted.

my personal favorite way to tone down a background is to make it black and white, leaving only the subject in color.

Basically, use your freehand selection tool (point to point) to go around your subject. Feather the selection a few pixels. Then invert the selection. Then use the gaussian blur to blur the background.

This is a very nice article written by a good photographer, Ron Lacey, who teaches both photography and digital darkroom for PSP
