about saving layouts

Need some advice. I am very new to digital scrapbooking and PSP, so this might be seem rediculous. Anyway, I have been saving my layout under different names as I add element to it. Thre problem I have been having with this one particular layout, is that it has been saving as a background. So when I open it I can not work in it because it is just a background no layers? This last time I saved it and closed it, I knew I was finished it, but I can't have this happening. I have done other layouts and haven't had the problem. What is going on or what am I doing wrong?

Thanks!

Are you checking the type of file that you are saving as? You should be saving as a PSP file. That will preserve your layers. If you save as a JPEG file, it will flatten the file and you will just get a background when you go to open it. Don't know if that may be the problem or not. It's possible that you had the save as command defaulting to PSP file for all your layouts and then somehow changed it to a JPEG for this one and didn't realize it. Hope you get the problem fixed, whatever it turns out to be
