Help - transparent background

How do I make a transparent background? Everytime I do an image (like my signature) that I would like a transparent background on, when I go to save it a white background appears. I am very new to this program and have had no luck finding a tutorial showing me how to do it. TIA

Not sure if I'm talking about the correct thing or not (if not, please forgive) but when I need a transparent background, there is a box to check when you start a new layout.

YES, my bad.
You need to make sure to start out with a transparent background.
File>new> and check the transparent bg box
then to save it
File>export>PNG optimizer
