Trouble with Text in PSP 9

Hi!

I've been practicing all night with this and am about to go to bed with burning red eyes!!! I've been playing with a kit and trying different tutorials out to learn the PSP 9 program.

Do you have advice for adding text/journaling to my pages in PSP 9? When I go to edit it after creating the journaling, it is really difficult. It's like I need to know ahead of time exactly what fonts, sizes, etc, I need.

Am I the only one who eyeballs things and does things by trial and error? Do you know something I don't know?? Can you let me know any tricks you have for journaling in PSP 9??

Thanks!
Jen

Hi Jen,
You should be able to see what is happening on your LO while your text box is active.
I always make my text vector text so I can change it anytime I want...unless you merge your layers and save as .psp.
I pull my text box off to the side of my LO image so I can see both.
Then if you want to change your text on the fly while you are watching it, highlight the text you typed into the dialog box, and then you can make any changes you want, size, color, fonts when it's right you can click apply and it's there. If you want to change it, again create as vector text.
Another thing that would help you in getting your questions answered sooner is to post your replies in the Jasc Paint Shop Por forum, below under the Software & Hardware BYTES.
Looking forward to seeing you there!! ;o)
Tracey

I find that the easiest way to arrange my text in PSP is to type it out in Word, then copy and paste it into the input area of the text tool. Another thing I have done is to copy and paste the text directly as a layer into the layout, but the colors sometimes are annoying to tweak.

Thanks so much to responding to all 3 of my posts. I haven't tried out your tricks yet, so I will probably ask you follow-up questions, if you don't mind.

When you copy and paste text directly as a layer, do you do it from PSP or from Word?

Also, when you work in Word, can you reset the margins so they fit the size of your lo? Like, to 12 x 12 or what have you?

Thanks,
Jen

Juliet, when you copy and paste the text directly as a layer into the layout, don't you get the white background behind the text?
I get the meta tag import dialog box when I try to paste as any type of layer..?
And then if I paste into the text dialog box and if I have to backspace a line, to correct the alignment of my text, PSP's text window does not seem to retain the formatting of tabs/spaces the Word put in there....? And then I am right back to adding them in PSP again anyhow...
Please tell me how you do this... ;o)

Jen, Like you said if you learn best by trial and error try pasting in from Word into PSP and then just try it in PSP and see which way seems the easiest to you...

I personally can't image taking text from Word (however I do use it for spell checking)and pasting it in PSP9, I find it easier to arrange my text as I type in the PSP text box.. Easy to highlight parts of a word or the first letter of a word and change the properties of those compared to leaving the others alone.
Also you can see where and how far you can continue to type until you run out of room on say a tag or journal sheet..

Another trick I just learned (that is if you had have a mouse with a scroll) is get a rough idea of the size text you want to use then click on the font to highlight it and then use the scroll. This will scroll through your list of fonts so you can preview your text while scrolling with out hitting each font one by one. This also works for the size text.

Also, Tracey have you tried to take your text from word then to note pad then to psp? I think that may alleviate the meta tag. Just a thought.

Thanks Lori, yes I used to have to do that if I wanted to take something from Word and use it in FrontPage and didn't want all the extra codes it puts in there.

I don't use Word though to create my psp text, just as a spell checker, then I just paste it back into my text box and apply.. ;o)

I love my scroll mouse it does a lot of things, I love it when I am trying to get just the right size brush to fit in a tight spot..
