Talking brushes

I have a question about brushes in PSP9. This is one of the things I am very confused about. Everyone is always talking about brushes. Where do I find brushes are they on the tools toolbar. Like the paint brush or oil brush or chalk. Sometimes I see flower on a layout and they say these are brushes. I am just totally confused about these. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks Lane

brushes

The paint brush icon can be changed to different brush tips. You may not have that tool bar open you will need to go to view then toolbars/pallettes to bring it up.. It will have a circle dot with a down delta (arrow/tab) that you click and this opens to give you options to choose from. If you have not used this you probably have just what the program came with. You will probably need to download some. You need to make sure that when you download brushes that you want PSP brushes or image paks/stamps. Only on the real early Photoshop brushes can PSP read due to the size of PS brushes. Most of the time the site tells you if you can use them for PSP. However brushes for PSP are a LOT smaller demand than PS brushes so you have to look for them a little more. They have a list where to get some on one of the threads just do a search.

Also don't save the brushes in the default PSP file. This will make your system run too slow. Make another folder somewhere else then go to file preferences and add it to the list for where to go for brushes.

HTH,
Tina

To compensate for the small size of PSP brushes (as against Photoshop ones) put each brush stroke/stamp on a new layer if you want it larger and drag the deform box until it is the required size.

Also, if you have an image you wish to make into a brush, open it, convert to black/white, then select, go to File>Export>Custom Brush, da, da you've now made a brush.

You can add noise or other filters, erase parts of it out etc. after you have converted to B/W but before you select. The maximum size is 500 pixels so it is easier to open a new document and fill with the image you wish to make into a brush.

HTH, if you need any further help, holler!

Jules

Hi Tina,

Just wanted to say thanks for your response on this question (and Jules for asking the question!)

I've only been digiscrapping for a couple of months but have just managed to find, download and install some brushes so have some playing to do now Would I be right in thinking of them more like complex stamps rather than brushes as such?

Cheers for the great info!

Jo

Yes and no, if you click once you will get a single image of whichever brush you have chosen. If you drag your mouse you will get a different image altogether.

You can alter how your brushes stamp/paint by changing the options in the Brush variance palette (View>Palettes>Brush Variance). The possibilities are endless. Have fun!
