I think I made a HUGE mistake with my LO's

Hi all,

I've only posted here a few times but lurk here very regularly. I've only been scrapping a few months using PSP9 and had never printed out any of my LO's.
DH printed one for me today at work (just to see how it would look) it only came out at 8cm by 8cm! It's really small.

Am I going to have to re-do all my pages (about 15-20) or is there a way to fix this? I can't see how I would get it bigger without losing quality.
I'm so stupid that I didn't check what I was doing properly.

Any advice?

Jo

Er...looks like it was only 800 pixels by 800 pixels, with 100 DPI
This is bad isn't it?

Thanks for the very quick reply ShellyRae!

Um yes sorry Jo ..very bad ..there is no way to recover the needed dimensions to increase your print size - you will have to do over I'm afraid.

No matter what size you scrap on ..ensure your canvas resolution is at 300dpi. Then choose your canvas size in inches which will also determine your pixel size.
eg. a 8x8 canvas at 300dpi is 2400 x2400 pixels
eg. a 12x12 canvas at 300dpi is 3600 x 3600 pixels

The beginning of this tutorial http://scrapbook-bytes.com/cgi-scrip...icle_269.shtml shows you how to set up a canvas.

Just a suggestion, but maybe a 8x8 album would be an easy fix for these LO's!!

I know from past experience that you 'can' take a photo and increase it by steps of 10%
ex: 110% done repeatedly in steps....and increasing the ppi to something around 200. You shouldn't have to do this many times to get it to a printable 10x10 or 12x12. Bear in mind however that they will lose some of their quality, but it could be worth a try..
Give me a holler if you want to know how to do it... I have to play with the settings from time to time to remember them in the right steps...

Shelly you see very knowledgeable about ppi,dpi & resolutions, size and everything!!

I would like to ask this question then because it is mentioned so many times...

Why not just take the 800x800 ppi LO's, Copy and Paste them onto a new 3600x3600 300dpi canvas and then just use the deform tool to stretch these LO's to the right size?

Seems to be the belief that, this method somehow retains the quality of a 72dpi image when placed on a 300dpi canvas and deformed to the right size...(usually to a bigger size)
I hope you understand what it is I am asking or talking about.

My belief is that you "Cannot" take an image that only has so many pixels (72) and then take them and spread them out over a larger (300) area without reducing the quality of the image!
I understand that the 72pixel image takes on the 300pixels LO, when the 72 pixel image is added to that 300dpi LO as that image file can only have one dpi/resolution.

That would be like taking just enough frosting to frost a 9x9 cake 1" thick, and trying to get the same quailty (1") of frosting on a 9x12 in cake!!!! Just is not possible!! Or am I totally not understanding what happens to pixels when they gets stretched out?

Tracey, you've absolutely got it right. It will look OK on screen possibly, but when printing the quality would be horrible.

BTW, I think Zebette is in Australia and is talking about 8 cm x 8 cm. I'm not good on my metric conversions, but I think that's really small. Far smaller than 8"x8". It's going to have to be redone. Sorry!

Hi again ShelleyRae,

Looks like I will be -re-scrapping a few pages! Thanks for your help on this. I've been playing with my PSP9 settings and have now managed to figure out how to make it 12 x 12 inches with a DPI of 300 and the dimensions even say 3600 x 3600, so hopefully I am on the right track now!
When I pull up the image information it says "pixel depth/colours: 24/16 Million"
Is that right?

Hayley, thanks for your input too. Even if you don't know it you have helped me heaps before (particularly with cutting photos into shapes!)

MissKim - Yes it did come out 8cm x 8cm so much to small to probably do anything with !

Will try to post more regularly here as I love this forum!

Jo
