I want to learn how to do a cutout picture. For example the top right picture on this awesome layout.

does anyone know how to do it? When I go into effects; 3d effects then cutout, it only looks like it shadows 2 sides of the picture. HMMM

One way to do it is Have your photo on one layer, place another layer with the background of your choice on top (lower the opacity temporarily so you can see the photo underneath) then using your selection tool select the area you wish to remove, hit delete, then deselect. Now change opacity back to 100% and add your shadow (quite a wide shadow). Play around with your filters and you will come up with different effects.

HTH,
Jules

I think it looks like that picture is on a matt that has been Beveled..

take a square that is a bit bigger than your picture... (above the background layer and below your picture) and click on inner bevel.. Play with the setting to get the effect you want.. Put your picture on top of it and it should look like the sample picture..

Thanks. I'm going to try both of these suggestions.

Here is what I did to get that effect.

Use your selection tool to make the square where you want it.
Make sure you are working on a layer
Use the inner bevel tool and make the depth whatever you want and make sure the light is white and coming from 180 degrees.
Click OK and then go to selections menu and choose modify and then contract. Set pixels close to what you made the depths before in the inner bevel. Click OK and you will notice the selection has shrunk that many pixels.
Hit the delete key to delete the area under the selection and you have something like what you wanted.
Play around with the bevel settings and the contraction settings to get the effect you want.
