Question Backing up HDD files... to DVD?

I know I should have been doing this all along but I am such a procrastinator...

I need to back up my HDD of all my scrapbooking files.. heaven forbid I lose them someday..
I have put a few folders of elements and stuff on CD but if I do them all like that it is going to take a heck of alot of CD's...

Somebody in another thread mentioned burning to DVD..
Can that be done.. does it hold more? How would I do that?? ( have a DVD burner but havent played with it much yet)

Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated..

Thanks!!

Are you on a Mac or a pc? If you have a superdrive on a mac it is easy. If you have a PC, I am sure that it is also easy, I just don't know how to do it since I own a Mac. Whatever you do, just make certain to make two copies of the backup discs so that you can keep one set off-site in case of fire, etc.

First you need to have a DVD burner (just stating obvious

usually they come with DVD burning software or there are free programs do dl on the net

a DVD holds about 4.7 GB

a little info in the tut here : http://scrapbook-bytes.com/cgi-scrip...icle_146.shtml

I have oodles of scrapping stuff on DVD and external drive so yes it can be done. I almost never use CDs anymore since DVD's have dropped in price. Post if you have any more questions, although not on the geek squad I do watch too much tech tv LOL

Well I am NO pc expert, but here is what my book on Windows XP and copying to a CD says (I am making the assumption that it works the same for DVDs):

1.) Insert blank DVD into DVD burner drive.
2.) A special burning window should open up, if not just click open the DVD icon.
3.) You can either drag the files you want copied into the DVD window or find the files to copy and then right click and pick send to DVD drive
4.) Make certain your files are less than 4.7 GB (like 4.3)
5.) On the task pane, click write these files to DVD or just File --> write these files to DVD.

Hope those directions work! Good Luck!

P.S. Thanks for your compliments about my LOs.

What is even more exciting is that if you have a double layer dvd burner, and you buy double layer dvds, you can burn 8.5 gig in one sitting ... now that's a lot of layouts, lol! I have burnt my last 2 1/2 years of digital photos onto these dvds, as well as copying everything to an external drive. Putting all my precious 'eggs' into several 'baskets', lol ... ksharonk
PS. The only downside to this is the cost of the double layer dvds ... expensive!!!
