This one is wonderful. To quote the cover page "She vividly brings to life the strangely exhilirating sideshows of humanity lost to traditional history over the last seven hundred years...She summons the ghosts of those women who counted for nothing in their own day and brings them to unforgettable life in fiction". I have always considered the short story perfection. A sucker for l---o---n---g novels (preferably trilogies!) but a perfect short story is exquisite. This anthology packs 17 of them.

Here's mine right now...I can't get enough of the Stephanie Plumb novels by Janet Evanovich...and this one (Four to Score) was my favorite so far!

Reading is such a huge part of my life I could have picked a thousand books...but I am hooked on this series right now

Can't say enough good things about Ruth Rendell or Barbara Vine. The latter are straight novels of the intense psychological kind. Incredibly intense and ofen I have not been able to read them straight through (one of my bad habits is to sit down and read a book from beginning to end non stop) as they are just too gut wrenching. The former are set in a mystery-police detective genre but Rendell's writing is so literary it can't be constrained by a genre. She is to the police novel what LeCarre is to the spy novel etcetera. There are a few close runner ups in my opinion (Walters, George to name a couple) but Rendell is the queen.
