sizing layouts to fit on this site

Most of my lo are too big to upload them on here. How do you all get them to fit? I have tried making a thumbnail version
(smaller in size). However, it comes up way too small in the gallery. Am I missing something? Should I be compressing the files or something?

Photoshop 7 and CS (can't remember if 5 and 6 have this or not) have a nifty little feature. it's called Save For Web.

after you have saved your layout, full size- go to Layer>Flatten Image. Then go to Image>Image Size and change the dpi to 72 (if it isn't already). you want to flatten the image before changing the dpi, because if you don't, then all of your drop shadows and layer styles will change.

now- go to File>Save For Web. when the save for web screen pops up, you need to change the preset (the drop down box directly under the 'cancel' button) to Jpeg High.

Click on the image size tab- change the bigger number to about 500 pixels. click Apply. in the lower left hand corner of the box, you'll see something like '100 kb' (or similar). if that number is larger than 125 kb- change the pixel size and hit apply again. keep doing this until your image is under 125 kb. when you are under 125 kb- hit save.

Yeah, I do pretty much what Tracey does. After I save my original, which I always leave in photoshop format so I can make changes later, go to image>duplicate, flatten, and change DPI to 72. Then save, change format to JPG and set quality at low. I have never used the save for web option, but I am guessing it does about the same thing. Hope to see some of your LOs in the gallery soon! -Alison

I use a TON of layer effects in my LO's, so I don't flatten my images because certain layer effects get lost/look different when flattened. When I'm done and it's saved as a PSD file, I change the res. to 72, turn all my palettes off so they can't be seen on the screen (tab key), fit my LO to window (cntrl + 0) and do a screen capture (print screen key on keyboard). Then I do file>new>enter (whenever you have something in the clipboard, the new file is already set to the right size to hold it) and paste the screen capture. From this I crop the now low-res image that looks they way I intended and do a save-for-web. (Although sometimes I will make the image a bit smaller in image size before doing save-for-web so I don't have to use a super low JPG setting to make it under 100K). AN extra step or two, but this way I'm not dissapointed when my JPG version doesn't match my PSD version.
