Styles question

Is there anyway to "freeze" a style so that the element can be turned or slanted? I am trying to use "Pipes" from the studio exchange, I can only make pipes that go horizontal, but I can't make vertical. Hence . . . I want to "freeze" the style so that the pipes can be placed vertical also.

I hope that you can understand what I can asking.

Sallie

Depending on how the style was created, you may just be able to adjust the angle of the "global light". Or you can go into each separate effect and adjust the relevant direction/angle.

If not, then you can choose "Create Layers" from the layer style menu which will create a separate layer for each effect that was used, either above or below the existing layer, depending on the effect. The effects will no longer be adjustable. You would then need to link those layers together, so they will rotate together. (You can merge the linked layers if desired, just make sure they're not linked to anything you don't want merged.)

Hope that makes sense!

Thanks Kim! But I think that I still need to explain better. The situation is that the pipes in this style only run horizontal, if I turn the pipe (rectangle) vertical, the style does not turn with the pipe. So I have stripes running across instead of lengthwise. Kind of like turning a piece of glass from landscape to portrait, the view "through the glass" does not move with the glass. (but I want it to, LOL) Unfortunately, this is the down side of almost all styles, they are created to only run in one direction and are not made to turn, at least while active.

Anyway, I have been pondering the problem and have hit the solution ! All I need to do is make my pipe horizontal, and save it as a .png. Then it will be a separate element not effected by the style anymore. The style will be "frozen" to the pipe.

This is very complicated to explain !

Anyway, it is always fun to solve a challenge.

Hi Sallie -

I did understand your problem, and my last suggestion definitely would have worked, since it converts the styles into a plain non-style layer (which is why the effects are no longer adjustabe). Also, if you know how to do it, you can adjust almost any style to go a different direction by going into the layer style effects settings, but sometimes if it's a complex style, it's more trouble than it's worth.

I went to the Adobe Studio Exchange and grabbed a pipe style, so I could show you an example of what I was talking about for future reference. (See attachment.)

Anyway, I didn't realize you were working with an indivdiual element. I assumed you were working within a complex layout. So in your case, your way is probably just as easy. Glad you found something that worked for you.
