using elements

I have PhotoShop 5.5 and downloaded some elements to use. First I created a new file then filled the first layer with color. Then I opened one of the elements. When I dragged it across to my new file, the gray background shows around the element. Does this mean the transparency doesn't work with this version 5.5? I checked and I can in fact save items with the png extension. What is going on?
Thanks for your answers!

OK- now I don't feel so bad- someone with an older version like me!!! I have 4.0- I keep putting 7.0 in the program used, but that's from when I was using the free trial

For my version I click on Select >Load Selection>OK
then drag it over.

Did you get an answer to your question?
First thing to check is to make sure you downloaded .png versions of the file. If you clicked on the photo to download you may have gotten them as jpgs. Is this a problem with all of the elements you downloaded?

thank you for the help!

I tried the Load Slection idea and, lo and behold, it worked! I guess I didn't even think to do that! Great answer. I'm glad there are other people with "older" programs.
