Managing Presets?

I have downloaded a gazillion brushes, shapes, and styles. Is there some way I can manage them and remove them from PS for later use.

It takes FOREVER for PS to load with all these extras.

Does having so many present cause PS to run slower?

I'm on a Mac G4 running Panther.

I have 1.5 gigabyts of memory

You could always remove your extra brushes etc out of Presets and into another file located somewhere else on your computer. Then use the load feature to bring them into PS when you need them. When you should down PS after each session these brushes will be lost and you'll have to reload load them on your next use of PS. Hope this makes sense and I understood your question in the manner it was intended

that's pretty much my understanding. I wish I had some way to drag and drop them into folders that would identify them. Like a different folder for differnet type brushes......butterflies, wings, stars, snowflakes, etc. That way I could load just the particular brushes I wanted to use.

Do you know if having everthing loaded causes PS to run slower?

I have PS CS and I used the Presets Manager to delete out all the brushes I didn't want and save the new just-my-favorites bunch as a preset. I also moved all the other ones to a different location as suggested above. Now when I launch, only my default group loads. If I want any of the others, I load them back in through the Presets Manager. As long as you save your new group with a different name, it doesn't actually delete the others, but if you name it the same when saving, it would.

Forgot to answer the second part of your question. I used to be the product manager for the the PS tech-support team for Adobe so have a lot of good background knowledge of the program (was part of my job to teach the new 1st level techs the ins and outs of PS). Anyway, that was about 6 yrs ago, but as I recall having a lot of those type of things loading (and fonts too are a huge drain) will slow down the launching process, but not really the running of the program as you go about using it. I have over 3,000 fonts installed (I know, Iknow, I need to find time to weed them out!) and probably about 30 different brush sets and I don't notice it working slowly, although launching it takes a couple minutes. I'm on a PC though so hard to compare with the MAC architecture. I have a 1 GB in RAM and you mentioned you had 1.5 GB, so I would think your machine would scream.

Thanks for the info!

I was lying awake late last night when it came to me how I can organize my brushes and shapes. (my best inspiration usually comes in the middle of the night!)

I plan to rename each with a code letter to identify them. for instance, B for butterfles and birds.....A for angels.......C for Celtic.....F for flowers. N for trees and leaves. etc. Then I can group them together by letter and save them as a new group and load just what I want to use.

I'll let you know if my idea flys or flops!

I rename my brushes to more easily identify each, but I also make separate folders within Brushes for each category, e.g., Butterflies, Celtic, Alphabets, Grunge, etc.
